PC Magazine has put together a list of the very best genealogy apps. How many of them do you use? Genealogists who aren’t currently using these apps might want to take a look at them.
You’ve probably heard the saying: “There’s an app for that!” It is no surprise that there are plenty of apps that are designed with genealogists in mind.
PC Magazine picked four genealogy apps that they consider to be the very best ones. They did a very detailed, descriptive, write up and review of those apps. Ancestral Quest is made by a company called Incline Software. It is an app designed to be used on a PC, and requires Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP or Windows 2000. It is not available as a native Mac program at this time. It costs $29.95. It has been described as a serious, straightforward, and no-nonsense program that will let experienced genealogists to get a lot of research done.
Ancestry.com is an app that lets genealogists connect with the extremely popular Ancestry.com website. It is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. The price of the app varies. You can download the app for free, and use it to create a family tree. If you want the app to do more, then you will need to purchase a membership. The price of membership ranges from $12.95 per month to $34.95 per month. The more you pay, the more records you will gain access to.
Family Tree Maker is an app that is designed to be used on a PC. It requires Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. This app, like the previous one, is made by Ancestry.com. There is also a Mac version The Mac version usually costs $69.99, but is on sale for $55.99 right now. The PC version usually costs $39.99 but is on sale for $31.99 right now. You will need to have an Ancestry.com membership in order to use this app.
Legacy Family Tree Deluxe 7.5 is designed to be used on a PC, and requires Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 7. At this time there isn’t a native version that can be used on a Mac. If you already have Legacy 7, then you can download Legacy 7.5 for free. If not, then you can download it for $29.95.
