Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Brushathon

I had an absolutely delightful morning at the cats-only boarding facility yesterday! Don’t get me wrong — I really like this job. I enjoy working with the cats, I like the exercise, I like the change of pace from my other job (writing). We have great clients and some really wonderful guests. But some days, the job is challenging. The kitties are extra messy, or I’m just off my routine and trying to catch up. Yesterday was the opposite. Yesterday, I had the magic touch. I was the cat whisperer. An aggressive cat needed to be weighed? I picked her … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Little Visitors

At the cats-only boarding facility, we share a building with the cats-only vet who owns us… and a few other businesses. Next door to the vet side of the building is a Little Gym. Throughout the day on any given day, kids and parents on their way to the Gym will stop and peek into the windows to see the cat (or cats) in the playroom. Once in a while, parent and child will come inside to see the kitties. I’m always happy to show them around. This week happens to be Animal Week at our Little Gym, so we’ve … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

You’re probably familiar of the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde — a doctor who is transformed into a monster by drinking a potion. Both characters are two sides of the same person; one a creature of evil and cruelty and one a brilliant and friendly man. Sometimes, it seems like our guests at the cats-only boarding facility must be drinking the same potion. Cats that are perfectly calm and well-behaved for us may be stressed or violent on the vet side of the building (and vice versa). Once in a while, I get a look at both sides … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: The Old Switcheroo!

Sometimes we get look-alikes at the cats-only boarding facility. I think I’ve mentioned the kitty brothers who are identical except for the shape of their eyes — two male cats from the same litter, both all white. The way to tell them apart is that one has rounder eyes and the other has squinty eyes. And that’s it. We have another client who has two Bengal cats. They look very similar, except for the pattern of the markings — one has a swirly pattern and the other is more stripey. Needless to say, it can get kind of tricky when … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Pictures and Report Cards

Today was a frustertaining day at the cats-only boarding facility. Frustertaining = entertaining and frustrating at the same time. Why? Because I was working on report cards. We try to write up a little report card for every guest who stays with us. It’s got checklists for how the cat ate, how the cat seemed emotionally, and what health issues we may have noticed. There’s space for comments… and we put a picture on the front. (School pictures and report card day, all in one!) Once again, I found myself appreciating the folks who do pet photography professionally. Some of … Continue reading

Celebrating a Second Anniversary as a Pets Blogger

Two years ago today I officially started on with Families.com as one of their newest Pets Bloggers. Ironically enough, two years later on my anniversary date, here I’ve turned in my two weeks notice. (I just realized as I started writing this that I did that on my start date anniversary.) It’s been a good ride, a very fun ride, and an amazingly informative one. I’ll still be around for the next couple of weeks, but I wanted to take a moment and reflect on some of my favorite blogs from the past couple of years. A Few of My … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Adventures in Cat Trapping

We have a new stray hanging around the cats only boarding facility. I haven’t seen him yet, but my coworkers have. He’s a grey tabby with a white belly, and he doesn’t seem healthy at all. If we can catch him, the vets can take a look at him and help him if possible. Thus, the great Cat Trapping Project began. A few weeks ago, we hauled out the big wire trap and set it with a tempting meal of mush inside. Morning one: the bowl is empty. The trap has been sprung. Nobody’s inside. Morning two: the bowl is … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Outbreak Aftermath

After several of our guests got sick with an upper respiratory virus, we decided it was time for a major cleaning. We’re already very dedicated to cleaning at the cats-only boarding facility. The condos are cleaned as soon as a guest leaves, and at least once per week if they sit empty. The floors are swept and mopped twice per day. The playroom and exam room are sanitized after each cat is inside. But after four cats came down with a kind of cold, we didn’t want to chance other guests catching the same runny nose, runny eyes, and sneezing. … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Kitten Mania!

I tend to think of spring and early summer as kitten time, more than fall. But we’ve had a bunch of kittens make an appearance at the cats-only boarding facility lately. It started when one of our vets — Doctor K. — came back from a weekend trip. While she was hiking with the family, they were approached by a pair of very young kittens. As Doctor K. described it, they came bounding out of a field towards the family! She trapped the kittens and brought them home (much to the disgust of her two adult male cats), then into … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Two Happy Endings for the Price of One

At the beginning of the summer, someone called the cats-only boarding facility hoping to find her lost cat. She was staying at a nearby hotel and the cat had slipped out when someone had come to the door. (It’s all too easy for this to happen, as I learned when I was on my cross-country trip with Moose and Lally!) We promised to keep an eye out for her cat — a grey kitty with big blue eyes. Since we leave food out for the local feral cats, we often get other wanderers stopping by for a nibble. But months … Continue reading
