Photographing Special Spots

The mega-popular South by Southwest (SXSW) shindig is just a few weeks away. The annual music and film conference and festival held in Austin, Texas, has grown exponentially in the last few years. These days it attracts A-list celebrities and hundreds of thousands of fans from around the world.

In addition to featuring amazing tunes and fabulous flicks, the event places the city of Austin in the spotlight. The capital of Texas is home to stunning architectural wonders and an amazing array of natural beauty. If you are planning to attend SXSW, consider taking some time to explore the historically rich city that photographs phenomenally well.

If you enjoy shooting in the great outdoors head to Zilker Park and Nature Preserve. The popular tourist spot is located just outside of the city and features miles of awe-inspiring scenery. While you are there take aim at Taniguchi Oriental Garden which houses breathtaking floral and fauna. Next, venture over to photo-friendly Lou Neff Point, where Barton Creek flows into the Colorado River. The area is where shutterbugs congregate to document downtown Austin and the river flowing through it. If you have time to spare, lace up your boots and hike along one of the preserve’s many nature trails. The dirt paths lead to cliffs which provide sweeping views of the park. Your landscape shots will surely impress, especially with all of the wildflowers, trees and rock formations that you can include in a single shot.

Camera buffs with a passion for photographing unique architecture should not miss the chance to snap Austin’s State Capitol complex. The massive structure sits on 46 acres of immaculately landscaped property and has an air of grandeur. The classic statehouse is made of one-of-a-kind Texas pink granite and dominates the city skyline. What’s more, you can now take incredible photos of the building at night thanks to the installation of high wattage lights which illuminate it from sunset to sunrise. If you go, take the opportunity to experiment with different angles. The complex’s varying lines and unique architectural nuances yield magnificent shots.
