Planning a Valentine’s Party for School

Today I am busy planning games for the Valentine’s Day party for my twins’ third grade class. Their winter holiday party got canceled due to a blizzard. So I want the Valentine’s party to be extra special.

I’m trying to think up fresh ideas or at least fun slants on old ideas. I think we might do the old guess how many valentine heart candies are in the jar game. But since they are learning multiplication now, I think I’ll throw a multiplying slant to it. How many candies would there be if there were three jars with just as many?

I’m also making up a bingo game. It’s easy to do with the table maker in my word processing program. For each board, I’ll just move a couple of words before I print it out so that everyone doesn’t get bingo at the same time. Instead of numbers though, I’m using words of things they have been studying in the last month of so. Words like Washington, Lincoln, Civil Rights, Martin Luther King, Jr., minerals, multiplication, and the names of different Native American tribes. I’m also throwing in a few Valentine words like heart and candy. And for fun I have their class room number and mascot.

I think we’ll try stacking candy hearts and see who can build the tallest stack. Another fun idea is for them to try to tear a paper into a heart shape – while holding the paper behind their backs!

For Christmas, I’d planned on having them try to draw a picture on top of their heads. I did this with my literacy program and the kids loved it. They put a book on their heads, and then a piece of paper. They tried to draw a tree with decorations and presents underneath. I think maybe we’ll try a heart with an arrow through it, and maybe the word Valentine across the bottom.

Hmm…maybe we need a relay race too….
