Planning Summer Fun

School got out a week ago. Normally our first week off is a do as little as possible week. We are all so glad to be home and to have free time that we don’t need a lot to entertain us. This week though, we’ve been off visiting relatives. I’m not sure yet if we’ll jump into our summer when we return, or if we will need a few days of doing hardly anything at all.

I really enjoy the lazy days of summer, but I also think we need some fun plans. If we don’t have things planned, or written on the calendar we seem to forget to do those fun things sometimes. In the hope that it will inspire you to make your own plans, here are some of ours:

Camping – I want to go at least once as a family. My husband and oldest do a lot of camping with the Boy Scouts, but I want the whole family to go.

Concerts – Our town sponsors free concerts in the parks several nights a week. I want to pack a supper picnic and go hear a few!

Farmer’s Market – We have great farmer’s markets in the summer. I love for the boys to meet real farmers and to see how the farm children help their families. I also love the fresh produce and the idea that we are supporting family and local businesses.

Garden – It’s hard to garden in the arid west. But I want to at least grow cherry tomatoes, herbs (cilantro, basil, chives), and bell peppers.

Summer Reading Program – Our library and a local bookstore both offer prizes for summer reading.

Ice Cream – My brother-in-law makes great homemade ice cream. The kids have decided we need an ice cream maker and need to make it at least once a week.

Next week, even if we do nothing, I’ll at least fill in the calendar with dates for concerts and the farmer’s market and scope out a good weekend for camping, too.
