Playing it Safe During Spring Break

This morning the Today show ran a piece on college co-eds prepping to go crazy on Spring Break in Cancun, Mexico. The report focused on an American student who was brutally attacked while he lounged poolside at his Mexican hotel. Basically, it raised the issue of spring break, foreign travel and safety.

Personally, Mexico is not exactly at the top of my family’s spring break destination list.

You know, drug cartels and all.

Of course, if you are not careful you can get hurt visiting your local children’s museum, though I doubt the injuries would be caused by masked men carrying AK-47s.

Still, if you are looking for fun-filled destinations to explore and enjoy with your kids this spring break, consider these safe(r) options:

Zoos and Aquariums: If your kids go gaga over animals, then head to a major zoo or aquarium like the Bronx, Brookfield or the Shedd. These popular attractions are designed to entertain guests of all ages with live shows, educational programs and engaging hands-on exhibits. You and your kids can get up close and personal with exotic animals and learn a few interesting tidbits in the process.

Dude Ranch: For families looking to channel their inner cowboys and girls, saddle up and head to a dude ranch. This is an excellent spring break option for clans that are tired of hitting the sand or slopes during March and April. Dude ranches allow you the chance to ride horses, swim, and camp in the great outdoors.

Cruises: Family sailings offer high seas adventures at a fairly reasonable price. Since meals, accommodations and most onboard activities are included in your rate, you can often score major savings by booking a family cabin on a voyage to a tropical spring break destination.

All-Inclusive Family Resorts: Club Med and Beaches are among the most popular all-inclusive resorts that cater to families with young children. The properties are filled with fun, family-oriented activities, including kayaking, snorkeling, dancing, swimming and surfing.
