Politicians and the Media Coverage Game

The pressObama is in Iraq. McCain is at the Yankees game. Obama is talking to world leaders. McCain is having a party for his good buddy Mitt Romney. This is the media coverage of McCain over the past few days. Now all of the sudden, McCain’s campaign is claiming that Obama is the media darling. (But of course McCain didn’t say that because McCain and Obama never do the dirty work. Their aids said that.) McCain says that Obama being in Iraq right now does nothing to distract the media from his campaign. (I wonder what planet he’s on?)

McCain’s Diabolical Plan

Okay–so maybe it’s not diabolical. But I do suspect that McCain, or at least the campaign is a little better at the media game than we all thought. Lo and behold, McCain is expected. . .possibly. . .maybe. . .to pick a running mate and announce it soon. Well soonish. Mabye. Possibly.

Whether or not he’s decided on a running mate and whether or not he has any intention of revealing that information right at this moment is irrelevant. What’s happening is that the media have all turned their focus and interest on the McCain campaign for right now. Like a group of puppy dogs trying to get a treat they are wagging their tails and following McCain’s every move. Obama hasn’t disappeared but he’s definitely out of the spotlight for the moment. He went from mid-section on the politics page with his outing with Guiliani, to front and center with the possibility of a Veep announcement. Oh, and that would be front and center in lieu of Obama.

Rest assured he won’t stay there if he doesn’t say something soon but that is the one announcement that could derail all eyes from Obama on his trip, back on McCain. I think that if he’s smart (which I suspect he is) that he should make the announcement this week.
