Politics Week in Review: June 9 to June 12

With a slight lull as the country readjusts to considering who will be the best Democratic nominee to thinking about who will be the next President, the politics blog was a little quieter this week. Apparently McCain has been gearing up for the Democratic nominee and has been ready with a defense as to why he should be chosen to be the next Republican president. With that said, here is a quick run down of what we covered in the politics blog this week: Thursday, June 12 The Vice of E-Mail in This Campaign–I took a look at how candidates … Continue reading

The Way Things Work (in Politics)

It’s too bad David Macaulay (of The New Way Things Work fame) didn’t expand his expertise to politics. Right about now we could use some detailed diagramming of how on earth one goes from a barely known Illinois senator to the presumptive Democratic nominee of the President of the United States. We could especially use that diagram to explain what superdelegates have to do with any of this. I promised in my last blog to explain delegates and superdelegates. So for all of you who are wondering what on earth all the hoopla was, now you’ll have an explanation with … Continue reading

Politics 101–Primaries

I have been covering the various candidates’ running platforms, but yesterday was the Pennsylvania primary and so I thought it would be more appropriate today to focus on what the purpose of a primary election is, why yesterday’s win was important, and what this means for the Democratic party. (McCain is said to have secured the Republican nomination on Feb. 28th.) I will return to discussing the Obama running platform tomorrow. What Exactly Is a Primary? A primary is essentially one means by which a party elects its candidate. Each state controls their own primaries and generally, when you register … Continue reading

Politics 101: Introduction and My Goal

“Okay kids, who can tell me whose running for President?” I asked my study group at the inner city tutoring center where I volunteer. “Someone named GOP!” “No, you’re dumb. . .it’s some black guy. We’re going to vote for him because he’s black.” The comments went on for another 5 minutes as to why you should vote for a woman instead of an African American or whether or not the old guy named “GOP” was an animal rights activist because one of the kids keeps seeing his picture with an elephant next to it. If these were little kids, … Continue reading

Can There Be a Do-Over in Politics?

So yesterday, I read in the paper that the Michigan governor as well as the Florida state party chair in conjunction with the Clinton campaign think there should be some kind of do-over vote in June. Considering that both Florida and Michigan held their primaries in January, what’s going on? Senator Clinton won both primaries, so why would her campaign support a ‘do-over’? Meaningless Votes Well, it turns out that the Democratic National Convention (DNC) stripped both states of their delegates because they held their primaries too early in violation of their rules. None of the candidates (Clinton and Obama … Continue reading

Welcome to the Politics Blog!

Welcome to the new Politics blog here at Families.com. Last week, the New Hampshire primaries demonstrated an upset in the presidential nominees. What’s great about the upcoming election is that it’s not about who is the front runner – because New Hampshire demonstrated that the front runner is not easily picked on either side of the aisle whether you’re looking at the Democratic party with Senator Barack Obama (our first potential black nominee), Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton (former First Lady and first potential female nominee) and Senator John Edwards (former nominee for Vice President). On Republican half of the ticket … Continue reading

Politics and Marriage

Let the official presidential election year begin! Tonight’s the Iowa caucuses. After that the focus moves on to New Hampshire where in five days there’ll be another vote on the candidates. From then on we’re in for one heck of a ride. Because no matter what happens along the way or who wins the final election, this voting year is already going down in the record books. How can it not with the first black man running for President as well as a woman? Do You Know Your Spouse’s Political Temperament? Is this your first voting year together as a … Continue reading

Hollywood Politics

Well, I guess they can’t all be as outspoken as Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Streisand… New information is surfacing daily in regards to how much money celebrities are shelling out to their political preferences—most notably the ones who do it in a less conspicuous manner than the stars I mentioned above. The politically progressive website run by Arianna Huffington recently revealed how much cash big name celebs are donating to the 2008 presidential candidates’ campaigns. As you may have well guessed most of Hollywood’s A-listers are backing the Democrats. For example, Huffington Post’s FundRace 2008 shows that actress Jennifer Aniston … Continue reading

Celebrities and Politics

Oprah has pledged her allegiance to him. Academy Award-winning actress, Halle Berry has said she’d “collect paper cups off the ground to make his pathway clear.” Even PEOPLE’s “Sexist Man Alive,” George Clooney calls him a friend. His star seems to be shining as bright as the ones Hollywood was built on. There’s no question about it; Senator Barack Obama has reached celebrity status. If you don’t believe me consider this: Three of the most powerful men in Hollywood – Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen – have just invited their high-profile Hollywood pals to a February 20th fundraiser … Continue reading

The Green Party

I don’t know about you, but I am a bit worn out with all the presidential race news. But, one thing I haven’t heard much about, unfortunately, is the Green Party. It seems like Al Gore should be its presidential candidate, but the Green Party candidates are actually Dr. Jill Stein and her vice-presidential candidate, Cheri Honkala. The Green Party isn’t new – it’s been around since 1984. What is their platform? According to its homepage, the Green Party, or “Greens” as they call themselves, “are grassroots activists, environmentalists, advocates for social justice, nonviolent resisters and regular citizens who’ve had … Continue reading
