Pop Culture Roundup – May 24, 2010

It has been a bizarre week for pop culture, even by Hollywood standards. Here are a few of the things that have happened:

Brittany Murphy’s Husband Found Dead

Simon Monjack, widower of Brittany Murphy, was found dead Sunday night at the couple’s home in Hollywood. Right now, officials are saying the 39-year-old Monjack died of natural causes, but there will be an investigation. Monjack was discovered by Brittany’s mother Sharon, who has shared the home with him since Brittany’s death.

Anyone really surprised by this? We often criticize people for not grieving enough after a death, but this man seemed to do nothing but grieve after Brittany died right before Christmas last year. Sadly, this reminds me a bit of Anna Nicole Smith’s death just months after her son died.

The Travoltas are Pregnant

About a year and a half after 16-year-old son Jett suffered a seizure and died while the family was on vacation, John Travolta and Kelly Preston have announced they are expecting.

I hate to rain on anyone’s parade and babies are blessings, but really. Kelly is 47 years old. If this baby is born healthy (and you know that at this advanced an age, having a baby with health issues is a very real possibility), Kelly will be 65 when this child graduates from high school. John will be 74. I think at some point, parents need to stop thinking about themselves and start thinking about how their age may affect the child and its upbringing.

Bret Michaels Wins “Celebrity Apprentice”

Many wondered if he would live long enough to see the finale (seriously), but Bret Michaels showed up on last night’s “Celebrity Apprentice” finale with his bandana in place. His opponent, Holly Robinson Peete, was stiff competition. She had raised more money for her charity than any other competitor on the series – ever. And, as Michaels’ said, she was playing the hot card – Holly was beautiful on last night’s show.

But, who could really fire Michaels? He had been through sleep issues (he overslept for a challenge), doubts that he had what it took to manage a team, a brain hemorrhage that could have killed him, had a “warning stroke” last week, and is now going to have a hole repaired in his heart. This poor guy has been through so much, I jokingly told my husband I was afraid one of his arms was going to fall off during the airing.

Michaels’ took it all in stride, telling Trump he would be okay with using the sympathy card if necessary to win the $3250,000 for the American Diabetes Association. In the end, Trump told Michaels’ he was hired and the audience, including Holly’s son, erupted in joy. Fortunately, no one is a loser as Snapple donated an additional $250,000 for Holly’s charity, Holly-Rod Foundation.

I am afraid if Trump hadn’t chosen Michaels as the celebrity apprentice, the crowd might have lynched him right there on the spot. Let’s just hope that now Michaels can get healthy!
