Preschool Picks: Online Learning Games

Cookie.com: One of my favorite picks for preschool online learning is Cookie.com. The site has learning games, fun games, worksheets, stories, videos, and arts and crafts. The games are entertaining while teaching solid lessons. The stories are online books that can be read to you or have the child read on her own. It is one site that will hold your child’s attention while teaching valuable skills. A child can learn phonics, math, and science. The games were developed by learning specialists. I Know That.com: A long time favorite in my home. All my kids have played on this site … Continue reading

Preschool Picks: Cooperative Games

A cooperative game is one where the players work together to overcome an obstacle to win the game. Acting within a group setting is essential to social development. We are often called to work together on projects, in school, or even in the workplace. A family defines the ability to live cooperatively. It is important that siblings and parents play games that focus on working together as a unit as opposed to being on opposite teams. A cooperative game allows the parent or an older sibling to mentor the young player through a game. I believe in healthy competition and … Continue reading

Preschool Picks: Ten Games in One

It is around the time when planning for the next preschool year begins. I love to choose items and curriculum for my preschooler. Perhaps it is because I am such a kid at heart. Preschool is a wonderful time of exploration and teaching through games. One of the questions I receive most is about products, curriculum, and games that I recommend for the preschool years. In this next series on Preschool Picks, I will share the best I have used and come across. The first item I want to share is My Very First Educational Play Zoo by HABA. Last … Continue reading

Preschool Party Games

Party games do not have to be complicated or require expensive supplies or work. Try some of these fun and classic games at your child’s next party. Cotton Balls: Provide one bowl filled with cotton balls and one empty bowl. Sit the child in front of the bowls and blindfold her. Then give her a large spoon and have her scoop the cotton balls from one bowl to another. Tallest to Shortest: Have the children stand in a circle holding hands. Then say “Go!” and the children let go of each other’s hands and try to get in line from … Continue reading

Board Games for Toddlers and Preschoolers

By the age of two, most children are ready to play simple board games. Here are some of the ones I recommend for toddlers and preschoolers. Yesterday, after a long day running around the house (my oldest son said it was exhausting work), and a quick dinner, I decided to settle things down for my own kids and one of their friends who spent the day with us. I suggested that we bring out a board game. “What’s a board game?” the little girl asked. In all of her six years of age, she had never played, let alone heard, … Continue reading

Stories Can Help Kids Prepare for Preschool

Will your little one be attending preschool for the very first time? He or she might be feeling a mix of emotions about going to preschool. These emotions can range from excitement about being a “big kid” who goes to school, to fear about what, exactly, he or she will face in the classroom. One way to calm worries and build confidence is with stories. Little kids often view story books as something fun to read (or have read to them). They don’t realize it, but many are using the stories as a means to help them understand the world … Continue reading

Winter Themed Birthday Party Ideas for Preschoolers

I have two children who have winter birthdays.  Having a summer birthday myself, I always felt sorry for children with winter birthdays.  It’s cold.  The weather is unpredictable.  A small children do not ski.  The sympathy for winter birthdays seems to be common.  When my children would reveal their January birthdays it was often met with an audible sigh that said, “I am so sorry.”  Yet, it doesn’t have to be that way.  Winter is a beautiful season. It’s a wonderland that you can bring indoors to make a party that won’t soon be forgotten. Before, I discuss some fun … Continue reading

Best Free iPad Apps for Preschoolers

I use my iPad for home education almost every day. Each of my kids has their own set of apps in a category with their name on it. I think the little student who was most thrilled about this was my preschooler. She loves exploring the apps on the iPad. She is getting quite good at navigating her way around. I enjoy looking through apps for her almost as much as she loves using them. With four kids, I try to be as frugal as possible when selecting apps. My favorite kind of app is free. Free is always in … Continue reading

Filling Up the Homeschool Schedule

My homeschool schedule this year looks more like a road school schedule. We will hardly be home at all this coming year. I feel children learn best the more they get to explore the world around them. I love bringing them to the zoo, the apple orchard, the park, art museum, library, and anywhere else we can explore. I spend one day week on a field trip from something as simple as the park or as fun as the zoo. We often bring our books on the road and notebooks to sketch and write about what we experience. In addition … Continue reading
