Closely Spaced Siblings? 10 Tips to Survive the First Few Months

I once heard someone say that having children closely spaced together was just like having twins. I have children spaced closely together–all of my kids are about two years apart. I have twins. I can assure you beyond a shadow of a doubt that the challenges are definitely not the same. That’s not to say though, that having children spaced closely together is easy. But once you make it past the first few months, it does get easier. Here are a few tips to make it past those early days! #1. Plan ahead and cook a little extra the six … Continue reading

Teen Birth Rate Hits All Time Low

A study done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that the number of babies being born to mothers who are teenagers is at an all time low. It has been consistently dropping for the past two decades. More research is needed to conclusively determine what caused the decrease. According to the CDC study, from 2006 to 2014, the birth rate for teens aged 15-19 years declined 41% overall. The greatest decline was for Hispanic teens (51%), followed by non-Hispanic blacks (44%), and non-Hispanic whites (35%). The birth rate ratio also declined for black teens compared with … Continue reading

10 Breastfeeding Facts from WHO

American society seems to have a different attitude toward breastfeeding sometimes than the world at large. I was shocked when I started nursing my first child a few years ago to learn that the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding until the age of 2. I had always thought that one year old was the recommended age, although I knew that many cultures breastfeed far beyond that. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding until 1 year. I have always breastfed my children until about 14 months of age. I am determined to breastfeed. This has not been an easy task … Continue reading

Can “Spoiling” Baby Create a Kinder Kid?

A friend posted an article on her facebook page, that supports my own personal views on parenting babies. I’ve never been a “cry it out” kind of Mom. I just couldn’t do it. I never felt it was the right way to go with my children. Although, I have friends who swear by the Baby Wise method, it just wasn’t for me. With my first child, every little whimper she made I ran to her side. I held her constantly, and nursed her around the clock as an infant. She co-slept with us for the first 4 months of her … Continue reading

Free Birth Announcements and a Photo Contest

If are expecting a baby during the summer months, you might be thinking about what you will do for birth announcements. There are tons of options: you can make them by hand, on the computer, or you can sent pre-made announcements with an enclosed snapshot. The easiest way to whip up a batch of personalized announcements fast is to use a photo template at a photo kiosk or photo site. Sometimes you can get some really great deals and the envelopes are almost always free. For example, did you know you can get up to 20 free photo birth announcements … Continue reading

Baby Bathtubs

When our daughter was born, we didn’t give her a bath for a long time. We for sure didn’t want her to get the usual bath most newborns get within hours of being born. The vernix (white, waxy-looking substance covering a newborn’s skin) has many health benefits for babies, and we wanted it to be absorbed into her skin, not washed off. When her umbilical cord fell off and we finally felt comfortable giving her a bath, we were excited to try out her infant bathtub. The little hammock that came with the infant tub was great, because it kept … Continue reading

TV Journalists Can be Hot Mamas Too

Nicole Kidman and Camila Alves aren’t the only hot mamas grabbing headlines this week. She might not have Alves’ figure or Kidman’s salary, but MSNBC Washington bureau chief Norah O’Donnell has something else that some women might envy—three beautiful and healthy children… under the age of two. Okay, maybe the last part is not as enviable as the first part… Truth be told, all three kids are not under the age of two. Actually, two of them are barely a year old while the other is less than a week old. Grace and Henry are O’Donnell and husband Geoff Tracy’s … Continue reading

A “Big” Child, a Quiet Wedding, and Another Celeb Mom Dies

Star of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” Chris Noth has announced that he and girlfriend Tara Wilson are expecting their first child together. Noth, 53, is also known for playing the character Mr. Big, love interest of Sarah Jessica Parker on the HBO show “Sex and the City.” The pair have recently been filming the upcoming “Sex and the City” movie, due to premiere in May 2008. But, while the pregnancy was announced, there were no announcements about an engagement or wedding. Could it be that Chris is more like his commitment phobic character Mr. Big than he would like … Continue reading

The Savvy Mom’s Thoughts on “the Hottest” New Baby Products

My disclaimer is that I’m not really that savvy. The word “experienced” fits better but it makes the title way too long. In any case, have you ever wondered whether or not you’re really going to need that nifty new thing in the stores that seems to be the “it“ baby product of the century? I remember registering with my first and remembering that I wished I had brought a friend with me to tell me what I really needed. Well, you don’t have to because I’m introducing a new feature to the baby blog. Amazon.com updates their “Movers and … Continue reading
