Preparedness and Old Fashioned Skills

When it comes to preparedness, it is important to know how to complete the tasks that you are preparing for. For example if you need to start a fire to keep warm, you should know how to do it. Or if you have stored a lot of wheat, you should know how to cook with it. The skills that we are losing due to modern conveniences may be too important to lose. It is important to prepare yourself for the possibility that you may need to do some of these things in the future.

One of the skills that you really may need is the ability to cook from scratch. This is not as intimidating as it may sound to some, and for most it does not seem that bad at all. It is important to have a good older cookbook that addresses some of these issues. They can teach you how to make cream soups, or other basic cooking skills that may have been replaced by boxed or canned goods. It is also important that you do know how to use the food that you are storing in your food storage.

Another common skill that is being lost is that of sewing. It really is less expensive to go to the store and buy items, rather than make them yourself. (Of course it does depend on where you are shopping.) However, it is important to know how to mend, and how to read a pattern if necessary. Sewing is a beautiful art form, but it is also a practical skill that can come in useful at various times.

Another useful skill is gardening. This is still quite popular, but if you have never done it, it can be intimidating. Canning is a skill that is also being lost, that can be beneficial and goes with gardening. You can learn these skills from people in your ward or neighborhood if you ask around.
