Product Review: Five Gold Stars For Food Storage Containers With Silver Linings

I rejoiced when I got my first set up Tupperware. I shed a tear (of joy) when they came out with disposable plastic containers. And I practically did a back flip when they invented the Seal N Save food storage unit. So imagine how excited I was when I found out there was a “new and improved” way to store food that also claimed to fight germs and odors—that’s right, I practically dropped to my knees.

FresherLonger Miracle Food Storage containers–manufactured and sold by the Sharper Image—are a true blessing for people like me who are constantly storing food in plastic containers. I won’t even tell you how many plastic containers I currently have in my refrigerator, freezer and cupboards—it has gotten to the point of embarrassment. (But, I know I’m not alone, hence this blog.) However, none of them compare to the FresherLonger Miracle Food Storage containers–for one simple reason—the silver lining.

It’s not a true silver lining, rather the new containers combine plastic and metal to extend freshness. Super-small silver nanoparticles are infused into the plastic and the results are incredible. I was introduced to the containers by accident. My daughter threw a fit when we were leaving playgroup and a fellow playgroup mom packed her up some strawberries in a FresherLonger container so she would have something to eat on the ride home. When we got home I left the container with the remaining berries in the refrigerator for more than a week. When I finally reopened the container (to my utter amazement) the strawberries were as fresh as the day we brought them home. Meanwhile, the fruits I had cut up and stored in my own plastic containers two days after playgroup had gone bad and been thrown out days prior.

I couldn’t believe it. When I went to the Shaper Image website to see what it was about these containers that gave them their “special powers” I learned that while the medical community has used the precious metal to fight bacteria and odor for decades, silver has only recently been showing up in items from clothes to soap, even washing machines. Apparently, the silver works when it comes into contact with certain germs, including e-coli or staph. According to doctors, the silver ends up “stopping that microbe being able to breath or reproduce, effectively killing the microbe.”

The downside to silver is that studies show it is highly toxic to aquatic life. But, as far as its impact on humans, doctors say: “From what we know there isn’t too much safety concern for humans. You need an awful lot of silver in your body before it becomes harmful.”

My 12-piece set cost about $70 and believe me it was money well spent.
