Questions to Ask Before You Join a CSA

csa Are you interested in a CSA but now sure what it is all about or whether or not it is worth it? Read this article to learn all of the questions that you need to ask before you join a CSA.

Last year, we got the opportunity to take part in a CSA, a Community Sponsored Agriculture program. Basically, each person who is part of the CSA buys a share in a farm. Everything that the farm produces throughout the CSA season is divided among its members.

I really enjoyed being part of the CSA, and I learned a lot. For example, it is a great money saving way to get really fresh organic produce, it exposes you to different varieties of produce that is not available in the stores, and you just never know what you are going to get.

This year, we decided to go for it and join a CSA, but we chose a different one from the one we participated in last year because we felt this years farm would better suit our family’s needs.

I’ve come up with some questions that you should know the answers to before you make a commitment to your CSA. If they have a website or a newsletter, you may be able to get some answers to your question that way, or simply call or stop by and ask!

How much is a share and are there other options such as a half share or small share?

Is it possible to upgrade your share (for example from a half share to a full share) after the season has started?

What types of produce are generally included in the share?

Where and when can you pick up the share?

Can someone else pick up your share for you if you go on vacation?

What happens if you are not able to pick up your share in a given week?

Do you have to pay all at once? When is payment due?

Can you swap out parts of your share or make substitutions on certain items?

Are there other items available for an additional cost?

You may have other questions as you learn more about your local CSA.
