Relax this Holiday Weekend with Disney Games

A holiday like Thanksgiving is the perfect time for a family to get together and play some games. Disney fanatics have many games from which they can choose to play that relate to the Mouse House. The official Disney Parks blog has a post on some of the possibilities.

Many of these are pre-existing popular board games that have released Disney editions. My mind immediately went to Monopoly, special versions of which you can find for just about anything, from “Star Wars” to college football. And of course there’s a Disney Monopoly. I wonder if in addition to purchasing Disney settings like Agrabah in the game, one can also buy park attractions such as Splash Mountain.

Another well-known game with a special Disney edition is Clue. It’s subtitled “The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror,” and you get to play using pieces designed as Disney Characters like Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy. I have to admit that investigating a Disney murder mystery seems a little macabre. Disney solves this by providing Pete as the “Mr. Body” stand-in. I guess we’re not supposed to care because he’s a villain.

The main focus of the post, however, is to unveil the latest Disney board game tie in: Memory Challenge: the Disney Theme Park edition. Memory Challenge is a game brand that exists on having different editions, to pose trivia to players about whatever topic they’re interested in; other versions include Civil War and National Parks.

I have to say I’d rather play a Disney movie trivia game than a Disney Parks trivia game. Perhaps such an edition is forthcoming.

Now I have new information on another Disney game, albeit one that most families won’t be able to play this weekend. In the same week as their announcement about the Disney Theme Park Memory Challenge, the parks blog posted a few tidbits on what the gameplay Disney World’s forthcoming Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom will be like.

This particular role-playing game will use trading cards, rather than boards and pieces or dice, as its tools. Players collect the cards which allow them to use various spells in the game, and they search through the Magic Kingdom for clues to the hiding places of the Disney Villains trying to take over the park.

Once they find the hideaways of the villains (the post mentioned Yzma and Kronk from “The Emperor’s New Groove” as examples), the players can use the various spell cards in the deck to do battle with their ousted enemies. Examples of spells include cyclones and fireballs.

Unfortunately, that was just about the whole content of the rather short Parks blog post on the game. We don’t have any further information on when it might officially open to the public. What we did learn, however, is that the game will be included with park admission and that it’s currently being play-tested in the parks. If it’s being tested already that means it will likely debut early next year, so look for more information on that in the near future.
