Rich Kids

I’ve known many a child who has rolled up on the last day of school in a limousine. No, we don’t live in Beverly Hills, Manhattan, or in the swanky northern suburbs of Chicago. We actually reside in a semi-rural area of the Upper Midwest, yet seeing kids ride to school in limos on special occasions is not an unusual sight.

Kids here might not have embraced the whole Silly Bandz trend, but the joy of cruising to class in a pimped out ride is not lost on country mice. Though, riding to summer camp in a helicopter, may be a bit out of their league.

Recession? What recession?

According to recent news reports, showing up to summer camp in a limo is passe.

A stretch Hummer? Been there, done that.

When it comes to traveling in style to a bunch of log cabins on a lake, apparently the ride of choice for today’s rich kids is a… private jet. And if there’s no landing strip available in the wilderness, the offspring of the affluent will make their entrance in a helicopter.

Roughing it? What’s that?

A new report says that private jet companies are seeing a boom in business this summer thanks to rich East Coast kids whose parents don’t want to deal with the hassle of escaping Manhattan via BMW.

Instead of driving their kids to summer camps in Pennsylvania, Maine or New Hampshire, wealthy Manhattan-based parents are turning to private aircrafts.

Why the heck not, right?

If you’ve got money to burn, then why not give into the pitch from private aviation companies, which remind parents “the commute to camp can be a stressful experience.” So why not calm your frayed nerves by forking over $3,500 per hour for a private jet to fly junior to his first underwater basket weaving lesson of the season?

Think I’m kidding? I’m not.

One company in New York is currently offering “Camp Card” packages, whereby parents can score discounts on private jet rentals if they buy three round-trip flights for Opening Day, Visiting Day and Departure Day.

Pity the kid who rolls up to camp in a minivan. Pity more the parents who have to hear said kid whine about rolling up to camp in a minivan when his bunkmate is dropping in via helicopter ala Donald Trump.
