Rock Your Routine With These Boredom Busters

Last month, I discussed the importance of routines for toddlers and their parents. In that same post, I mentioned that within the structure of your days there is plenty of room for freedom. It is important that we as parents make good use of that freedom both for ourselves and for our children so that none of us get bored. What kinds of things can you do in those spaces between your regular daily activities? The list is as limitless as your imagination. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Grab an empty dish pan, some dish soap, a little glycerin or light corn syrup, water, and assorted items from around the house that would make good “bubble blowing tools” and head outside for an activity that brings out the kid in everyone. Things like plastic bracelets, six pack rings from the recycling bin, and rings made by cutting the tops off of plastic bottles are just a few of the items that you could use as “bubble wands”.

Go play somewhere new. Sure, you and your kids are regulars at the neighborhood playground but why not shake things up a little and walk or drive to a different neighborhood or even a different town to check out a new playground every once in a while. The kids will get to try different play equipment and meet new friends, and you just might meet some other interesting parents to talk to.

Do something unexpected. If you usually watch movies on the weekends, why not surprise the family with dinner and a movie on a Tuesday. Love pancakes? You can enjoy them just as much in the evening as you do in the morning. Do you and your kids dread going grocery shopping at the same store week after week? Try a different store every once in a while. You get the idea, now go mix it up.
