Setting Fitness Goals with a Pedometer

Fitness

There are many different ways you can set fitness goals for the New Year.  One is by using a pedometer.

What I love about these is you can pick them up for as little as $10.  But you can certainly spend much more on a nicer model.

One type of goal you might want to set is taking 10,000 steps a day.  If that sounds like too much, you can reduce the amount.

Some people like to figure out the average number of steps they take and then set goals from that.  The best way to do this is calculate your steps for an entire week.  This will provide a more accurate average.

So let’s say you average 5,000 steps a day.  Try to increase it by 500 or 1,000.

Pedometers don’t just keep track of your steps.  They can help you keep track of your progress.  This is a great way to gauge how well you are doing, not only what needs improvement but recognizing your successes.

Pedometers can be purchased as separate units, or you can invest in a GPS watch.  These offer more features.  But don’t forget the many apps available for smart phones, many of which are free.

In addition to tracking the number of steps, some pedometers can monitor distances.  This is another way to meet fitness goals.  Let’s say you want to walk two miles a day.  You will be able to keep track of this on your pedometer.

Pedometers aren’t just for walkers.  Some can be used for swimming (waterproof, of course), biking and running.

Of all the fitness devices out there, I would have to say that pedometers are some of the most worthy.  And you really can’t go wrong when some can be used for free through a cell phone or you can spend a few bucks on one.
