Seven Things to Get at the Library for Free

libraryIf you haven’t visited your local library in a while, you might want to plan a visit sometime soon. The library is a very different place than it was just ten years ago, thanks in part to current technology. Plus, with the economy, there is a new need for additional services, all of which most community libraries are trying to provide. They are doing a very good job of it, too.

So get that library card out (or sign up for one) and start saving. Here are seven things that you can get at the library for free.

• Free Entertainment

You can entertain your children for free at the library. There are many different events and activities for children of all ages, from infant story time to science expos for teenagers. Adults ca participate in book discussions, and music or movie nights are great for the entire family.

Pick up your library’s calendar or check events online to see all of the upcoming entertainment that might be available free to you.

• Free Magazines

Many libraries are now working with Zinnio to provide its patrons with free digital magazine downloads. This means that you can browse all of your favorite digital magazines, from popular entertainment magazines to professional trade magazines.

You can view your magazines through a computer, tablet or mobile device. All you have to do is register with your library card number and then choose your magazines.

• Free Home Delivery

If you are housebound, disabled, or caring for a loved one, you might have hard time getting to the library. Don’t worry. Many libraries offer a free service that will deliver your books, videos and other items right to your door and pick them up when you are done.

• Free Internet

Can’t afford Internet or want to cut down on your monthly bills? Ditch your home Internet service and take advantage of the library’s free connection. No computer? Even that isn’t a problem, as many libraries offer access to both desktops and laptops. Take advantage of this!

• Free Tutoring

Tutors for homework or standardized tests, such as the SAT and GRE can be expensive. Instead of paying a private tutor, take advantage of free tutoring services as well as access to subscription databases for practice tests. Homework help lines will connect you or your child to a tutor or teacher from the comfort of your home, using your phone or the Internet.

• Free ebooks

Did you recently get an ereader, only to be surprised at how much ebooks can cost? When you use your library, you can borrow ebooks for free. They usually keep a wide selection of both popular and academic titles available for borrowing. The best part is that you can avoid any late fees, since the titles will just vanish from your ereader when the borrowing period is over unless you renew the ebook.

• Free Technical Training

Most libraries offer free training on basic computer skills, but many take this one step further, with training on additional technical topics, such as how to create a website or blog. You may also be able to get your technical problems solved, just by asking. Try your library before you pay for assistance at a store or computer manufacturer.
