Should a Wedding Be a Reason to Lose Weight?

The wedding season is just around the corner and I have been hearing stories about bride-to-be’s attempting to lose weight in order to “fit” into their wedding dress. It got me thinking…should a wedding be a reason to lose weight?

I don’t really think so. I know this goes against the normal way of doing American weddings but think about why this isn’t a good idea.

First of all, it makes no sense to buy a dress you can’t fit into, in the hopes that you will eventually be able to. If you met your soon-to-be husband the way you are is he not expecting the same thing the day you walk down the aisle?

Second of all, who are you really trying to impress? Are you doing it because you really do want to be healthier or is it to put on a show? If your motivation for losing weight is done for the wrong reasons, it isn’t likely to stick.

So much time, effort and money goes into this one day…when really it should be just one small moment in time. Your wedding day is a blip on the screen of life when you compare it to the days to follow. So why would losing weight for that one day be your goal?

Isn’t a healthy weight something you should strive for anyway? Whether or not you are getting married? Even after you have been married for 5, 10 or 20 years?

I have to admit, that it was driving me nuts in the days leading up to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. All I kept hearing about was her weight and how she would look in her wedding dress. Isn’t it come as you are?

Your wedding day should be no different. Come as you are. No, there is nothing wrong with trying to get healthy but make sure your motivation is in the right place.
