Stop the presses! Snow has fallen in New York City.
Okay, 19 inches is a lot in one day, but when you’ve suffered through a few Wisconsin winters, a foot or two of snow is not “breaking news.”
Granted, NYC’s population is 10 times the size as our rural roost, but still, you don’t see this much media coverage when Chicago gets hit hard with the white stuff.
Regardless, right now cable TV is saturated with news of the latest Snowmageddon that has paralyzed much of the East Coast. Schools are closed and parents are scrambling to find ways to keep their kids from contracting cabin fever.
If you are looking for simple and affordable activities to preserve your sanity on yet another snow day, then consider the following:
Coffee Filter Flowers: Make an entire bouquet of blossoms from a few cheap coffee filters. Have your child use markers or crayons to color the coffee filters. Then, fold the paper filters in half, and then in fourths making sure the ends are somewhat pointed. Embellish with sequins or glitter for an extra fancy touch. Finally, wrap a pipe cleaner around the end, leaving extra length for the stem.
Paper Bag Puppets: Since today is a snow day you should have extra paper lunch bags to spare. Use them to make simple puppets for you and your child to play with. Have your son or daughter decorate the bags and then add embellishments to make them more life-like. You can use yarn for hair, construction paper for noses and cotton balls for fur.
Popsicle Stick Frame: This classic arts and crafts project is as easy and affordable as it gets. Have kids glue Popsicle sticks end to end to make a frame, then glue a piece of cardboard to the back of the sticks, leaving the top section open so you can slide a picture into the frame. To make a hanging frame, glue a small magnet on the back of the cardboard. Once the glue dries, let your child decorate the frame with stickers, beads, buttons, markers or glitter glue.
