So Many Ways to Get Free Stuff

Did you know that despite the economy, there are so many ways to get free stuff? It is unbelievable how many different opportunities there are to supply your home and your family with items that you need for free. Here are my favorite ways to get stuff absolutely for free.

And don’t forget, when it comes to getting things for free, be sure to return the favor or pass it forward.

People you know

Your friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers can be a great source of free items. Chances are pretty good that the people you already know have exactly what you need and are willing to gift it to you for free. Some of my favorite things for free from people I know include baby clothes, baby equipment, children’s clothing, toys, wood and even furniture. Let everyone know what you are looking for by word of mouth or posting it on a real or virtual bulletin board.

Your community

The people in your community may also be a great source of items that you need at the great price for free. You can join a swapping site, such as Freecycle.org to go the easy route. You can also post a notice at your church, community center or shopping center.

Other ways to utilize your community for free stuff includes the following.

Curb shopping: bringing home good items that are put out on the curb for trash pick up. Sample items include children’s outgrown bikes and toys to scrap metal and furniture.

Dumpster diving: a more extreme form of curb shopping, this involves actually raiding the dumpsters of apartment complexes and retail complexes. You can usually find furniture, seasonal merchandise (often unopened) and even food, if you aren’t too squeamish.

Gleaning: There is a lot of extra stuff left over on farms, in parks, etc. You can glean everything from firewood to produce. Ask your local farmer or town authority if you can glean on a particular property. Most of the time, the answer will be yes. Never trespass.
