SoCal Spring Break Without Breaking the Bank

Are you ready for spring break 2013?

I’ve been ready since November 2012.

I would do just about anything to escape the brutal cold and ever-present snow that has smothered our neck of the woods for the past four months.

Are you with me?

If you need a reprieve from Old Man Winter, but don’t have a ton of cash to fund a luxurious spring break getaway, consider the plethora of travel deals being offered in sunny Southern California:

March 7-10, 2013:  Enjoy the magic of Oz on picturesque Coronado Island.  Next month, the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission is presenting an island-wide celebration of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum who wrote several Oz books in Coronado. Festivities include a free advance screening of Disney’s new film, Oz The Great & Powerful on March 7th at Coronado’s Village Theatre.  In addition, you can enjoy a book signing with children’s author Roger S. Baum, great-grandson of L. Frank Baum, on March 8th at the Coronado Public Library.  Then, on March 9th, you can take part in a “Wizard’s Breakfast.”  The special meal will be hosted at the house where Baum wrote Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, The Emerald City of Oz, The Road to Oz and parts of The Marvelous Land of Oz.

March 16-17, 2013:  Go green this spring in San Diego without having to spend a ton of green.  The city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival is free and open to the public.  The event kicks off on March 16th at 10:30 a.m. with a festive parade complete with Irish dancers, marching bands and plenty of leprechauns.  Following the parade, the all-day festival gets underway featuring food, beverages, musical entertainment and more.  Then, on March 17th, 60,000 square feet of Astroturf gets rolled out on downtown San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter to mimic the rolling hills of Ireland.  From noon to midnight you can rock out at ShamROCK 2013.  The St. Patrick’s Day party is for guests 21 years or older and requires a small entrance fee.

April 20-21, 2013:  Embrace spring at the largest tented flower show on the West Coast.  The 88th Annual Coronado Flower Show gets underway in Spreckels Park on April 20th.  In addition to hundreds of unique floral exhibits, you can enjoy live music, visit food booths and get growing tips from experts.  Tickets are just $5 for adults; admission for children 12 and under is free.
