Staying Active While Watching Television

I have a confession to make…I LOVE watching television. Not everyone will readily admit to such a thing, but I will.

I love watching docudramas. I love watching shows that educate you about particular issues of interest. I love shows where dreams come true (“American Idol,” “X Factor,” “America’s Got Talent”). I love “Cake Boss” and Fox News. But I also love to curl up on the couch with a blanket and snuggle in for a good movie.

Maybe you are a TV lover as well. It can easily become a good excuse to keep your bum on the couch all day long, but balance is the key.

Here is the thing about television; you can actually be an active viewer. Watching television doesn’t always have to be a sedentary activity.

How about parking your treadmill right in front of your set? Or you might put a television nearby your weight equipment. You can run in place, do some stair stepping, jumping jacks, push-ups or sit-ups.

If you don’t want to exercise during your show, you can take advantage of commercial breaks. This is your chance to sneak in some exercise. There are enough commercials on television that in a one hour program, you should be able to get in about 20 minutes worth of exercise.

However if you really want to make a difference, then spend an entire hour’s worth of television viewing incorporating some exercises. Switch things up…maybe 15 minutes of running in place, 15 minutes of weights, 15 minutes of yoga and then 15 minutes of stretches and cooling down exercises. That would be 7 hours a week…imagine the difference this would have on your health.

Let’s face it…for some of us avid TV viewers, there is little chance that we can be torn away completely. However, we can still be active while watching television.
