StoryCasting: For the Movie in Your Mind

Have you ever read a book and thought to yourself, “I can really see (insert actor’s name) playing this role if it’s ever made into a movie.” StoryCasting is a new website that lets you share your opinions on which actors should play which book characters. I just spent some time over there, and let me say, it was a lot of fun.

First I created my account, by filling in a username and password. Then I chose an avatar to represent me—okay, they didn’t really have one that I felt looked like me, but the one I chose was pretty cute, so I went with that one. After reading the terms of use, I clicked “create account,” and then I waited for just a minute while they sent me a confirmation e-mail. When that came, I clicked on the url included in the e-mail, and I was ready to roll.

Hmmm . . . where to begin? My mind fell on “Peace Like a River,” one of the most influential books I’ve ever read. Now came the hard part. Who should I cast to play the roles? I chose Freddie Highmore for Rueben and Abigail Breslin for Swede. I’m still working on the father. He’s the pivotal character and I want to get someone really good for him. Wait . . . I may be getting an inkling of Bill Pullman. Let me think on that.

Anyway, it’s so fun to think of a favorite book and plug a favorite actor into the role. It’s like being the ultimate Hollywood director. And the database is pretty huge – you can choose from hundreds of books. Every book I put into the search was there, or you can browse alphabetically.

I can see myself spending a great deal too much time on this site in the future . . . this may even be more addicting than Tetris. And trust me, Tetris was plenty addicting.
