Strengthen the Family

There has been a focus on strengthening the family lately. In my life I have felt a stronger urge to focus on my children and on the environment in my home. This last General Conference session there were five talks that were specifically on strengthening the family, while many others mentioned the importance of it. It is important to continually work on strengthening your family.

One of the most important things you can do is to help your children understand their purpose in this world. The best way to do this is teach them the plan of salvation. This includes the importance of keeping the commandments and an understanding of their vital roles in this plan. It is important that you teach them to use their strengths to fulfill their callings and assignments.

Personally, I have felt impressed that my family needs to spend more quality time together. We already have a lot of quantity, but I have felt impressed that we could use the time we spend together more effectively. There are several ways to do this. We could make family prayer more meaningful and plan our family home evening lessons better. We could make the memorable moments (trips to the zoo or the amusement park) teaching moments as well.

Most importantly we should teach our children about loving each other and themselves. This love is best understood when it comes from the home. By expressing our love to our children, and then treating them with respect and love. This does include teaching our children boundaries and consequences. As we teach with love, we will be more effective teachers. When love is in our homes they are much happier places.

In addition to focusing on teaching the gospel to your children, what are some ways that you have strengthened your family? Do you have any suggestions on building family unity?
