The two summer months of vacation away from school allow for a lot of fun learning with our children. While I can completely understand the trials and tribulations of being at home for two months straight with your children (mine are screaming right now!), summer is a time that we as parents should try to cherish.
The summer months give us the opportunity to learn and grow with our children. Below I listed an idea, or lesson plan for that matter, that I think every family can enjoy together.
As a child I can remember the excitement of trying to catch lightening bugs (fireflies). As an adult I still love to see them lighting up the night sky. I can also remember the wonder on my children’s faces as they too watch lightening bugs (fireflies) light up the sky on the first summer night. Lightening bugs (fireflies) can be fun and educational to watch and learn about.
Begin your lightening bug (fireflies) adventure by reading Fireflies by Sally M. Walker. This book has wonderful illustrations and lots of information. After reading, try checking out the following site for even more information:
This site, The Firefly Files, offers firefly facts and tips for increasing the amount of fireflies in your yard. While most insects are drawn to light, fireflies are more attracted to a dark yard. Havin tall grass also helps, one more reason to not have to mow your yard!
The site gives insight on why fireflies glow and what behaviors they exhibit. Read and discuss the information with your child.
Now the fun will begin! Take a jar or plastic container, with small holes, into the yard. Catch several fireflies and observe them. Identify any behaviors or characteristics that match the information you read from the book or the website. Always be sure to be careful and gentle with the bugs and set them free when you are finished with your observations.
