Sunday School: Temple and Family History Work, Temple Ordinances for You and Your Immediate Family

As we continue our look at the alternative Sunday School class “Temple and Family History Work,” let’s move on to the chapter entitled, “Temple Ordinances for Your and Your Immediate Family.”

The first ordinance mentioned is the endowment. It explains the purpose of life and helps us to understand Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation. The ordinance of the endowment is necessary for us to return to our Heavenly Father and to live with Him again. When we are faithful to the promises we make in the endowment, we not only feel the Spirit more, but we have an enlarged capacity to love and to serve. We understand God’s purpose and we feel more united in that purpose with him. We catch a glimpse of eternity and our place in it.

This ordinance is usually received when they are getting ready to serve a mission or get married. If neither of these opportunities have come about, a person can choose to be endowed later on.

The sealing ordinance unites families together forever. Husbands and wives can be married forever, and children can belong to them forever. There are certain covenants associated with this ordinance which bless the lives of all who live worthy of them. Even if you were not married in the temple initially, you can go back and be sealed in the temple and attain an eternal family, with your spouse and your children.

The temple is the house of the Lord and His Spirit can be felt there in great abundance. I know that as I have participated in these wonderful ordinances, I have felt closer to my Heavenly Father and I look forward to every chance I get to help my kindred dead, who died without having the chance to attend the temple for themselves, be blessed in this way.
