However, there are some school districts that have implemented an extended school day. It turns out that there are several benefits to doing so. Extended school days, which are also called extended learning time, have gained popularity within charter schools. Some charter schools may have a bit more freedom about how long their school day runs than some public schools do. That doesn’t mean it would be impossible for an extended school day to be … Continue reading

Benefits of Bartering

My 8-year-old cries poor like the Pentagon before commencing a $10 billion nuclear weapon upgrade. Granted, she doesn’t get a regular allowance, but with grandparents like these, she wants for very little. Actually, she wants a lot, but as the only granddaughter, she typically gets it all, which is why I don’t give her an allowance. This, of course, has led to many heated discussions on money, spending habits and budgeting.  However, thanks to a recently covered Social Studies unit on our country’s earliest settlers, we’ve added a new topic to our financial discussions:  bartering. Bartering is the exchange of … Continue reading

Benefits of Treadmills and Elliptical Exercisers

Going to the gym is not my thing.  And I always crack up whenever I drive past the clubs with the large windows, where you can see people walking on treadmills. For some reason, sweating seems like something that should be done in private.  But maybe that’s just me. At the same time, I’m not the type of person to fork out a lot of money on gym equipment.  Especially if there is the chance I won’t stick to it.  But a few years ago I made a worthwhile investment when I purchased a treadmill. Notice that I didn’t say … Continue reading

Nurses May Soon Strike Over Health Benefits

Around 6,000 registered nurses in New York could go on strike before the end of 2011. This is in part due to hospitals requiring an increase in the amount that nurses would have to pay for their health insurance premiums. It also has a lot to do with the cuts that hospitals are facing from Medicaid and Medicare payments. It is entirely possible that nurses in New York, who are represented by the New York State Nurses’ Association union, will end up striking. The union hasn’t yet given an official ten-day strike warning, and there is some potential for a … Continue reading

Anthem Suddenly Changes Medicare Advantage Plan

Anthem has decided to make drastic changes to its California Medicare Advantage plan. Instead of one plan, there will be thirteen of them. The insurer has basically dumped the people who had signed up for what is now the old plan, after sending them letters describing them as “valued customers”. Medicare Advantage is also called Medicare Part C. It is something that people who qualify for Medicare must purchase from a private health insurance company. In order to get Part C, a person must already be enrolled in both Part A and Part B. The enrollment period for people who … Continue reading
