Getting Married in Hawaii

I got married in Hawaii because it was where I was born and raised so my wedding planning was a bit different than a bride who plans to use the island paradise as the site for a destination wedding. Still, money is a factor no matter when, where or why you are getting hitched in Hawaii, which is why I thought this next travel deal was worth mentioning. It is called the Bliss Wedding Celebration and is being offered by the Lodge at Molokai Ranch. Prince Kapuaiwa, the future King Kamehameha V, founded the historic property more than a century … Continue reading

Cozy Retreat In Paradise

Are you a “Wheel of Fortune” fan? I used to be a die-hard fan when I was younger, but these days I rarely if ever get to watch the popular TV game show. So imagine my surprise when I was flipping through the channels last week (I was actually trying to find out more about the winter tornados that hit the southern part of our state) and stumbled across an episode of “Wheel of Fortune.” I was just about to continue flipping when my eye caught a spoke on the wheel with “Volcano” written on it. Someone who was born … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits—Vehicle Safety Programs for Seniors and a Whale of a Good Time on the Big Island

It’s the program many parents want their parents to attend… and for good reason. The national CarFit program, sponsored by the American Automobile Association (AAA), is designed to reduce the risk of accidents among older drivers (age 65 and up)… and it’s coming to a city near you. During 2008 trained professionals will be visiting all 50 states to evaluate the “fit” of the driver to the vehicle. The program assesses features such as safety belt use, head restraint setting, position of driver to air bags, mirror adjustment and line of sight, and operation of vehicle controls. The service is … Continue reading

Celebrating the Holidays At My Favorite Hotel in Hawaii

It’s a cross between Disneyland and Fantasy Island. A place where you can swim with dolphins in the morning and dine on world-class cuisine at night. A place where you ride to lunch on a gondola, electric tram or boat. And a place where I make a concerted effort to visit each time I travel home to the Big Island of Hawaii. I’m talking about the spectacular and extremely family friendly Hilton Waikoloa Village. I’ve written about the award-winning resort in previous blogs, but I have never covered the magnificent transformation it undergoes during the month of December. Each winter … Continue reading

Old Fashioned Hawaiian Holiday

I know we haven’t even eaten our way through Thanksgiving yet, but it’s no secret most people already have their holiday travel plans set in stone. If you are one of the lucky ones who plan to spend the holidays in paradise you may to add the following traditional Hawaiian Christmas event to your to-do list. This year on the Big Island of Hawaii the H.N. Greenwell Store is set to revive some local holiday customs during a series of special events called “An English Christmas in the Hawaiian Kingdom.” Henry Nicholas (H.N.) built the 1,000-square-foot structure located in Kealakekua … Continue reading
