My Favorite Baby Books: In My House

Exposing a baby to books and reading will set her on a wonderful path in life. Even the youngest babies enjoy being read. They love to hear mom, dad or a special caregiver’s voice, and babies do pick up a lot from being read to, from the cadence and sounds of language to actual vocabulary. Reading to your baby is also is a great way to enjoy some close bonding time. Goodnight Moon is a great book, but there are others out there that while not as well know are still little gems. With that said, I’ll be posting about … Continue reading

Three Seasonal “Biscuit” Books – Alyssa Satin Capucilli

When my twins were little, we loved the Biscuit books by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and Pat Schories. These gentle stories all feature a cute, silly puppy named Biscuit and his owner. His owner is never named, but referred to as “the little girl”. These are great stories for emerging readers and younger children. Even the youngest child can say “woof, woof” along with biscuit. The illustrations are very heart warming. Here are three Biscuit books, perfect to read in this season. Biscuit Visits the Pumpkin Patch is a sturdy board book. Very young children will enjoy this simple book. Biscuit … Continue reading

Breaking out the Baby books

Wow, we accumulated A LOT of baby books during our little girl’s infancy. There must have been hundreds of board books, cereal box freebies, and classic titles like Beatrix Potter and Winnie the Pooh packed away into the nursery room closet. Organizing these editions was one of the bigger, yet more pleasant, jobs that needed to be completed before baby number two’s birthday. Naturally, our three year old wanted in on the fun and during that shared experience I saw something amazingly cute and charming. Our little “big-girl”, upon seeing all these slightly-familiar-yet-new-again books, had an overwhelming desire to return … Continue reading

Great Book Ideas for Babies & Toddlers

Does your baby already have a library? Mine did. I was always looking for good books for her whether they were the edible cardboard kind or the exploratory touch and feel kind. I spent a lot of time out there looking for good books that would appeal to her. So if you’re like me and you’re looking for some great book ideas for your baby or toddler, here are a few that we like: When Sheep Sleep is a charming book written by Laura Numeroff and provides a lot of different things for your little one to count from the … Continue reading

Developing a Taste for Literature

There’s nothing like handing a book to a toddler and watching them literally tear through the pages to bring tears to the eyes. Common sense says that if you provide your toddler with something that makes a great sound like tearing paper – well, that’s exactly what they are going to do. But don’t despair, you can still engage your toddler with books galore – you just have to approach it from their level. Board Books Are Best Cardboard or board books are virtually indestructible. They’ll withstand juice being spilled on them, teeth marks being sunk into them and the … Continue reading

The Books of Sandra Boynton

Darling illustrations, cute storylines, and a touch of humor for the grown-ups – what more could a child’s book want? Very little, actually, and Sandra Boynton has hit the nail on the head. Her books are delightful and entertaining, and as a parent, I don’t mind reading them over and over again, unlike many other books on the market. Take, for instance, my very favorite Boynton, which is “But Not the Hippopotamus.” The first page reads, “A hog and a frog do a dance in the bog. But not the hippopotamus.” The hog and frog look joyful as they hold … Continue reading

Baby Einstein’s Best Books

Those of you who have read my previous blogs know that I am a big fan of The Baby Einstein Company and its products. Well, I usually blab on and on about all of the wonderful videos. Here you will find a small change of pace. Of course there are many books from The Baby Einstein Company, but there are three books that my daughter has which she absolutely adores: “What Does Violet See? Raindrops and Puddles,” “Windows to Color,” and “Mirror Me! A Mirror Book.” All three books were written by Julie Aigner-Clark, the founder of The Baby Einstein … Continue reading

My Favorite Baby Books

My daughter has a book collection that takes up two or three full book shelves all her own. I’ve been buying her books since before she could hold her head up. So I like to think of myself as a baby and children’s books aficionado. So for all you parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents of the babies age six months to two years – here are my favorite baby books. Pat the Bunny This book falls into the oldie, but a goody category. Dorothy Kunhardt’s classic has uses touch and feel to fascinate babies and has since 1940. It’s a … Continue reading

Books Illustrated by Val Chadwick Bagley

One of the most important things that I do with my children is read to them. Val Chadwick Bagley has illustrated some of my favorite LDS board books. We own several of his books, and I get as much out of them as do my children. Tamara Beckstrand has written most of the books I have which are illustrated by Val Chadwick Bagley. The books are simple and to the point, and several correlate with the theme of Primary that year such as “I Will Follow God’s Plan for Me,” and “I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of … Continue reading
