What Do Home Based Professionals Do During a Power Outage?

For the past two days, I have been in New Hampshire. An early snow storm a few days ago knocked out power in many parts of the state, including the town where we were staying. Ironically, the places that were hardest hit by the wintry weather were the places that were the furthest south. The reason for that is that not only did not much snow make it all the way north – I drove home to Vermont today and arrived to find almost no snow in our yard – the snow that did fall was heavy and wet. That … Continue reading

Does Kate Middleton Have Jewish Heritage?

The internet is an excellent place for rumors, misunderstood facts, and flat out lies to spread exponentially. There have been some people questioning whether or not Kate Middleton had Jewish heritage. How much can you really determine from the surnames of a person’s ancestors? Kate Middleton is the woman whom Prince William married in a huge wedding ceremony earlier this year. She was a commoner, and her family didn’t have a coat of arms until shortly before the Royal Wedding was scheduled. After Prince William and Kate Middleton got married, the couple was given several new titles. She became Her … Continue reading

Is Birth Control Sabotaging Your Fitness Goals?

If you are using oral birth control, it may be, without you even realizing it. A new study found that oral contraceptive use impairs muscle gains in young women, and is associated with lower hormone levels. That’s a shocking find, especially for active young women, who are looking to improve their fitness performance while taking oral birth control. Researchers at Texas A&M University and the University of Pittsburgh studied 73 healthy women between the ages of 18-31 for 10 weeks. During the study the women were broken up into two groups and completed whole-body resistance exercise training. The first group … Continue reading

Are You Taking Advantage of Your Neighborhood?

I was born and raised in New York City. Despite that fact, I didn’t visit the Empire State Building until I was well into adulthood. Some friends from out of town visited and wanted to see it. To this day, I still have not gone to the Statue of Liberty. My point here, is that while New York City may certainly be an extreme in terms of things to do and see, the fact is that living there, I never thought to visit some of the biggest things that attract visitors from all over the world. These places were in … Continue reading

Homeschoolers at a distinct disadvantage?

This was the title of an op-ed opinion written by an A/P English language teacher after the homeschooler-Pasco County meeting mentioned last week that few homeschoolers actually attended. “Trust us” was the message loud and clear from the parents attending the Hernando County School District’s outreach meeting to homeschoolers. We know what is best for our children. Unfortunately, when confronted with some “facts” concerning the success of home schooling for high school age children their response was not academic concern, but complete denial. Silly me, I thought these parents were truly concerned with excellence in education. Someone was in denial … Continue reading

Are You Being Taken Advantage Of or Helping Others?

It can be difficult to draw the line between serving others and being taken advantage of. This is especially difficult when it comes to members of the church. I am not speaking of teaching an occasional class or serving in a church calling, but of the times you are asked to help out in some way. Too often others assume because you are in the same ward, that you will offer a discount or do it for free. It can be difficult to deal with this situation. I have known people who expect plumbers to come over and fix major … Continue reading

Did You Have A Power Outage While You Were Away?

Sometimes if you are away for more than eight hours, your home may have suffered a power outage without your knowing. This could have some serious repercussions. For example, if your power went out and your frozen food thawed and then later refroze, it won’t be safe to eat. In the winter, a power outage can mean a loss oh heat and frozen pipes that burst, causing a flood. The soon you take care of a power outage, the better. It is also good to know if you had a power outage, because your electronics can be affected. Some electronics … Continue reading

Is Obesity Contagious?

Okay. You can’t “catch” obesity like you catch a cold. But obesity can spread like a disease through social networks, according to research from Harvard University. The Harvard study found that if a close friend gains an unhealthy amount of weight, your chances of packing on the pounds increase by more than fifty percent. If you and your overweight friend are the same gender, your chance of gaining an unhealthy amount of weight is more than seventy percent. Why? Because being around heavyset people might stretch your perception of what is appropriate in terms of body size. It isn’t a … Continue reading

What About Those Kids For Whom All The World IS a Stage?

Let’s face it, some of us are just drawn to drama, and there are definitely some kids who seem to make everything into a performance and a production. While this can be entertaining some times and add a little flare of excitement now and again—too much drama and performance can wear on a parent! What can be done when you’ve gotten lucky and have one of those very dramatic, “always performing” children? My younger sister is a professional actor, so I grew up with the cute, performing sibling. As a parent, I also lucked out and two out of my … Continue reading

Emmy Thoughts: “What Was Up With That Stage?”

I can picture it now… a few months ago a summer intern working with Emmy show producers comes into work following an evening taking in Shakespeare’s Othello at a knock-off Globe Theatre in Burbank. He walks into a morning meeting where his bosses are kicking around ways to infuse “new life” into the 50-year plus telecast. “I have it,” the intern exclaims. “Build a theater-in-the-round stage in the Shrine Auditorium where ensemble casts are forced to sit together rather than scattered about.” “Hmmm…” the producers ponder before coming to the conclusion: “It’s so crazy it might just work.” Yeah, well, … Continue reading
