Walter Cronkite Dies at 92

I’m sorry if it seems that, in the last few months, the Pop Culture blog has become more of the Dead Celebrity blog, but we have lost so many great personalities. Today, we lost another as Walter Cronkite died at the age of 92. It sometimes seems as if there wasn’t a new story from the twentieth century that Cronkite didn’t cover. World War II? Check. Nuremberg Trials? Check. First man on the moon? Check. Assassination of President John F. Kennedy? Check. Watergate? Check. Not only was Cronkite there for the pivotal times of our last century, he covered each … Continue reading

Television Shows: Renewed, Cancelled, and in Limbo

Are you wondering if your favorite television show is going to be renewed? Most networks still have until late May to make a final announcement of their fall lineups, but here are some of the shows we know we will or won’t see again. Some of the ABC shows that have officially been renewed are “Brothers & Sisters,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost,” “Private Practice,” and “Ugly Betty.” There had been fear by fans that “Ugly Betty” would be cancelled after ratings dropped in season 3. NBC actually renewed “Friday Night Lights” for two more seasons, despite the fact that … Continue reading

Saying Goodbye to “Guiding Light”

I honestly never thought I would see the day that “Guiding Light” would end, but alas, the long-running CBS soap opera will shine no more. According to reports, the 72-year-old daytime serial has been cancelled. The final episode will air on September 18th. Do you know how many retirees are crying right now? I know one retired woman, who lives and dies by CBS soaps. My friend’s grandmother has been a fan of “Guiding Light” since it debuted on TV in June 1952 (the daytime drama began as a radio soap opera in 1937) and has only missed a handful … Continue reading

Celebrities Playing the Moving Game

Move over Trace Adkins another smooth talker is heading to Genoa City. Her hair is about as long as the country crooner’s but that’s about all Kathy Hilton has in common with the “Celebrity Apprentice” runner-up other than the fact she also secured a gig on CBS’ award-winning soap opera “The Young and the Restless.” Paris’ mom will play herself on the May 13th episode. According to show producers, Hilton is asked to find a magazine cover model for her friend Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), but takes over the photo shoot in a manner that infuriates magazine staffers. This will … Continue reading

Put a Sock in it Doogie Howser!

I think it’s finally dawning on Neil Patrick Harris that he’s better off keeping his mouth shut when it comes to Britney Spears. The “How I Met Your Mother” star is once again going public to set the record straight on remarks he made regarding Britney Spears’ recent cameo on the CBS sitcom. Earlier this week Harris was asked in an interview: “Why does such a gem of a show need Britney to get any attention?” To which the former “Doogie Howser, M.D.” star responded, “I’m in the minority that our show does not need stunt casting in order to … Continue reading

Is CBS Cutting Couric?

Even if that were their plan they certainly wouldn’t spin it that way. Instead, the brass at the eye network would make it appear to viewers that Katie Couric herself made the decision to leave her cushy anchor job for greener pastures. Enter the Wall Street Journal. The paper recently ran an article in which it quotes CBS News executives and a select group of Couric’s inner circle saying what insiders predicted was bound to happen sooner rather than later: The former “Today” show host is expected to leave her post at CBS Evening News shortly after the January 2009 … Continue reading

Big Brother Gaffe

If you are watching the reality show “Big Brother,” you probably saw that a contestant on the new Couples season made a comment the other day that has sent many in the community reeling. This season, the big twist to the show is that all the contestants supposedly came in not knowing each other. Based on questionnaires they filled out before the show, they were matched with a person who seemed to be their perfect mate. Adam, a contestant who claims that he works for an autism foundation, but the show’s web page says he is a public relations manager, … Continue reading

Soap Star’s Son Dies

Actress Hunter Tylo’s 19-year-old son has died. Tylo, who has been a cast member of CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” on and off for more than 15 years is reportedly inconsolable. Who can blame her? According to police reports, Michael Tylo, Jr. drowned in a pool at a residence in Nevada late Thursday night. Officers say an unidentified family member discovered Michael’s body. In addition, the coroner has determined the teen’s death was an accident. Preliminary reports say it appears Michael fell in the pool after experiencing a seizure. The report also says Tylo’s son did suffer from a … Continue reading

Dan Rather Wants $70 Million From Former Bosses

How could you not see this coming? Former CBS anchor Dan Rather filed a $70 million lawsuit against CBS Corp. and CBS’ parent company today. In the court papers, the newsman claims his former bosses made him the “scapegoat” for the controversy story that was later discredited regarding President Bush’s military service during the Vietnam War. You’ll recall 75-year-old Rather was removed from his anchor job at “CBS Evening News” in March 2005. He was later replaced by short-term successor Bob Schieffer and eventually by current anchor Katie Couric. Since his firing Rather has maintained that the network “intentionally botched” … Continue reading

All About Katie

I’ll admit I have written quite a number of blogs about Katie Couric. Most of them were penned in the days following her historic move to the “CBS Evening News.” Next month will mark Couric’s first anniversary at the CBS anchor desk and wouldn’t you know that her big day is being marred by the publication of a new book that allegedly paints the peppy former “Today” show queen in a very unflattering light. Talk about timing. It’s no secret that Couric has faced a ton of criticism in the last few months. Rating for her show have tanked since … Continue reading
