Small Business, Big Decision

Sometimes, home – based professionals must make big decisions about their home – based businesses. Sometimes, there is a need for quick thinking and swift, decisive action. Fortunately, I don’t have to make any decisions like that right now because when it comes to major decisions, I don’t like to rush things. Often, home – based professionals are aware that big decisions must be made well in advance of the time that they must make their choice. I am in the process of thinking through a major decision regarding my home – based law office. The big decision that I … Continue reading

The Big Snip

Vasectomy, the very word strikes fear into the heart of some men. ‘No way!’ many men say, ‘anyone’s giving me the snip.’ They seem to equate such an operation with a loss of manhood. It’s okay for women to take the pill, or use other forms of contraception or even have their tubes tied if the couple has reached the decision that no more children is the best option, but no way anyone is getting near them for any operation. On the other hand I heard a male minister say one time if it was the best and safest option … Continue reading

What Does It Mean to Be Head of the Household? part 2

Yesterday I looked at what I believe it doesn’t mean to be head of the household and some of what it does. Here are further ideas on the subject. Beliefs, values, priorities, family ideas and spending in a marriage ought to be along similar lines, not just what one person decides. The person commenting on the original blog suggested that the husband was in charge of finances and the wife needed to justify all expenses to her husband. What about working out together what is needed and how finances are spent? As for the husband being free to spend as … Continue reading

Making Changes as a Single Parent

Making life changes are hard for most people. Add to that being a single parent and it is no wonder that many parents stress over big decisions. Every decision we make as single parents affects the lives of our children. While that is true for all parents, those of us who are single don’t have anyone else to share the decision with. When there are two parents in a household and they choose together to make a change, they support each other. For single parents, we must be strong enough to make a decision and follow it through. While we … Continue reading

The Decision to Become a Single Mother

My son is the best thing to ever happen in my life. It wasn’t an easy decision to become a single mother. I did it because it was what was best for my son. His father didn’t want to be involved in his life. While I was disappointed in him, I did understand his reasons and, after a lot of conversation, agreed to accept his decision. Being a single mother is hard. There are trips to the grocery store, where you could really use both hands. There are those times, when you are holding your child and an arm full … Continue reading

Once Upon a Day – Lisa Tucker

The characters in Lisa Tucker’s Once Upon a Day immediately sucked me into their world. This story is told through the point of views of many interesting characters. Stephen was a doctor, and quite happy in his life until his lost his wife and daughter in a car accident. Because he couldn’t save them, he gave up medicine and began driving a cab. Dorothea is a twenty-three year old woman who has never before left home, gone to school, or had a friend. She’s been raised with her brother in The Sanctuary, by her father and grandmother. While she’s had … Continue reading

Are You Up For A Challenge?

In a recent newsletter I subscribe to it asked ‘When was the last time you challenged yourself as a writer? What challenge did you make?’ Let me turn that around and ask when was the last time you challenged yourself as a Christian? Challenged yourself to take on a job or ministry that takes you out of your comfort zone? I love writing. Writing bible study questions and notes was no exception. Leading a discussion group was also something I felt comfortable doing. But when asked to become the teaching leader, standing up each week to give a 40 minute … Continue reading

Cupcakes Instead of Wedding Cake?

It seems as though a new trend has begun in the idea of wedding reception planning. The traditional wedding reception consists of at least a bride’s cake (usually white), a groom’s cake (typically chocolate), nuts, mints, and punch. Some weddings are much more elaborate but these are usually thought to be the necessities. However, as mentioned in a previous article, weddings are taking on a much less formal and more relaxed tone. The idea behind the wedding cake has changed. Brides are now finding it more acceptable to offer their guests cupcakes instead of cake slices. The time and effort … Continue reading

It is Okay to Take Time Making Big Decisions

When I was younger, I used to be much more spontaneous and much more of a “risk-taker” than I am now. Or, perhaps, I am still a pretty big risk-taker, I just do a bit more research and take more calculated risks than I did in my youth and young adulthood. As a single parent, it is perfectly fine to take time making big decisions. In fact, all that research and consideration can help us learn to be better decision-makers overall. For example, I spent almost two years learning about art, reading books, going to galleries and thinking about what … Continue reading

You Get to Decide How You Want to Do Business

You may think it goes without saying but for many of us, it takes us a while to learn just how much we are in charge of the HOW in how we do business. For those of us who are inexperienced or lacking confidence, we may be overly concerned with following “protocol” or trying to run our small home businesses like a large corporation. It is worthwhile I think for us to remind ourselves that we are the ones who get to decide exactly how we go about conducting our businesses. You do not have to do anything you absolutely … Continue reading
