An FHE Challenge

Yesterday in Sunday School we learned about Moses’ last sermon to the Children of Israel. We learned about the advice he gives them, about the phylacteries they wore, and the symbols they placed on their doorposts to remind them of their God. While we don’t wear these leather bands on our heads and arms, we aren’t so different today. Many LDS people wear symbols of their faith including CTR rings, Young Women medallions or scouting pins, and other visual reminders. Many of us also have visual reminders in our homes of our faith such as pictures, statues, and plaques. But … Continue reading

Monday Nights in Nauvoo – Janet Burningham

How cool is this? With the focus this year on Joseph Smith, it only makes sense that we would undertake a deeper study of his background, surroundings, and lifestyle. “Monday Nights in Nauvoo” is a great family home evening resource book that centers the lessons around life in Nauvoo, particularly on elements of Church history. Now your family can study Church history together at home as well as at church. Each lesson begins with the background of the lesson, which ties it in to Church history. We are also told what pictures from the Gospel Art Kit would coordinate with … Continue reading

A Beautiful Family Home Evening

We do Family Home Evening whenever our schedule allows us. We most often do it on my husband’s day off, and with his work shift changing periodically, sometimes we’ll meet together on Sunday, or Tuesday, or Friday – just whenever we can work it in peacefully. We had our Family Home Evening this afternoon, strangely enough, and we found it one of the sweetest we’ve ever had. I’d like to share the highlights with you, if I may. My daughter is working on her Faith in God award and one of the suggested goals is to give a Family Home … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Temples

One important subject to consider for family home evening is that of the temple. It is important to teach your children the sacredness of the temple, and the importance of your children going to the temple someday. It may be difficult to know exactly what is appropriate to discuss as a family. You may want to read this talk “Preparing Our Families for the Temple” by Sister Carol B Thomas. Family Home Evening: Friends

The next topic in the “For the Strength of the Youth” guide is friends. This can be an important topic to have a family home evening lesson on because of the strong influences friends can have on you and your children. As you prepare this lesson, make sure that you are in tune with the spirit. If there are certain friends of you children who you do not approve of try not to bring up specific names in front of the whole family. This could cause a lot of unnecessary conflict. It would be better to talk to that child … Continue reading
