My Favorite Backseat Traveling Toys

Homeschool is a misconception since most who homeschool are rarely home.  As summer hits we are home even less.  Each of my kids are signed up for an activity, a day summer camp, or a volunteer opportunity.  I make sure they are not overloaded but with four kids I am always dropping off or picking up someone.  My two little ones are always in tow no matter whose day it is to go somewhere.  As you can image they get bored with all the driving around.  Since my older two kids have the most to do it leaves my little … Continue reading

Frugal Homeschool Field Trip Tips

A field trip does not have to be costly or extravagant to serve its purpose. The purpose behind a field trip is to give kids a real world experience and a change of scenery. A change is good to allow lessons to sink in and draw a connection to the world. Lessons are sometimes best when they jump off the page. With a little creativity and research you can have a homeschooling journey that does not break the bank. Library: Check your local library for special events and classes. Most will be free or have a small fee. You may … Continue reading

Home Schooling Is Cheaper Than Public School

Being able to home school my girls was a choice I was glad I made. Not only could I see over their education and spend quality time with them, but it was far cheaper than public school. Back when I was a kid public school was free. Each child got their books, pencils, paper, art supplies, and many other school supplies for free. We’d even go on several field trips throughout the year, all for free as well. About the only thing my parents had to pay for was my lunch. Times have definitely changed, especially over the last decade. … Continue reading

Square Foot Field Trip – Backyard Exploring

Home schooling is, in my opinion, the best type of schooling there is. You can be certain your children are learning skills that are important for life such as filling out job applications, balancing checkbooks, cooking, frugal spending, and more. This is in addition to the typical education of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. But staying at home all the time can get boring for kids and parents. Field trips are excellent ways to get out of the house for awhile and incorporate fun with learning. But what if you’re simply too tired to drag the kids to a museum, library, … Continue reading

Field Trip Tips

Are you getting ready to explore the idea of field trips? Here are some tips that I have learned over the years with little ones. Be flexible. It is fine to aim for a certain number of activities, but flexibility will allow everyone to enjoy the trip more. Be prepared to go home when the little ones are tired, to stop for diaper changes, to skip an activity or attraction in order to spend more time at the previous one. Bring snacks. Having some refreshing snacks available is so important. Many times on a field trip, toddlers and preschoolers are … Continue reading

Pre-Kindergarten Children on the Bus

As some of you know, my daughter began preschool this year. She is attending a pre-kindergarten program at a private Catholic School in the county in which I live. The private school has pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. While the preschool or pre-kindergarten class is in a separate building from the rest of the school, they still do many activities that the school children participate in. For example, they are included in fundraisers, eating in the cafeteria, computer lab, field trips, etc. My daughter only attends school two days a week. For a fall activity, the pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade … Continue reading

My Son’s First Field Trip- Part Two

This morning I wrote about Tyler’s first field trip without me. Well, I goofed. When I picked him up from school, he was a little upset because he was not allowed to go on the field trip. The permission slips were sent home on Tuesday. No where on the letter did it state, “please return on Wednesday so that we can know how many buses we need”. Okay, maybe I should have known that but I’m new at this. I just assumed that since they were planning to take the entire school they had enough buses reserved. The tickets and … Continue reading

My Son’s First Field Trip Without Me

One of the reasons I wanted to work from home was so that I could be available for all of Tyler’s assorted school activities. Especially field trips. Somehow, the thought of my baby going out into the world without me was a scary thought. So far this year I have attended every school function, including field trips. Today was an exception. When Tyler came home with a permission slip Tuesday for an outing to the movies, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to go. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to go. But again, I was afraid … Continue reading

Homeschool Glossary (words homeschoolers should know) – F-G

Flexible Learning is a lot like unschooling. Actually, it is like unschooling under the umbrella of a private school. Some flexible learning programs will provide a diploma; others will just allow the homschooler to take classes. Clonlara Home Based Program, for example is a functioning day schools that work as a flexible learning school. Clonlara does administrative work for the parents. All the parents need to do is journal the activities of the child and submit it. The school turns the journals into a documented diploma. There are dozens more flexible learning schools especially in states like California where restrictions … Continue reading

The Homeschooler’s Advent Calendar: Handel’s Messiah

At the risk of offending, I do not consider anyone truly culturally literate unless they are familiar with Handel’s Messiah. (There are several other classical pieces about which I could say this too–but hey, it’s Christmas time!) I am always extra thankful to live in New York City at this time of year. There are a wealth of venues at which to go see this performed. May I suggest that if you’ve never seen it–take your kids and go. It is nothing short of awe inspiring in my opinion–especially if it’s done very well. Besides going to hear the Messiah … Continue reading
