My Turkey Freezer Session

When I say that I do freezer cooking sessions, it is a little misleading. I don’t usually take a day to do a whole freezer full of meals. Instead, I practice some big cooking, and I make up freezer meals with the leftovers over the following couple of days. Last night, I made a 20 pound turkey and five pounds of mashed potatoes. We had turkey, mashed potatoes and peas for dinner. I took the time to get the entire turkey carved up and separated. The dark meat went into one container, while the white meat went onto a platter. … Continue reading

Frugal Freezer Cooking: “Hot Pockets” 2

We are working on a freezer cooking idea–that of making “hot pockets.” You can make these pockets for pennies as opposed to buying the expensive ones in the grocery store. They are also much tastier than those other ones, I personally think. The hot pockets can be brought in for lunch or just heated for snacks. If you missed the first post that appeared earlier today, please click here. Frugal Freezer Cooking: “Hot Pockets” Now let’s continue. You can then form the pocket into a rectangle, if you want to more traditional shape. I do this by flatting the pocket … Continue reading

Frugal Freezer Cooking: “Hot Pockets”

Stocking your freezer using leftovers or foodstuff that you buy in bulk on sale can really save you quite a bit of money. If you have the freezer and the room, I highly recommend doing some freezer cooking. It will give you the opportunity to have low cost meals handy and avoid eating out, and it will also give you the opportunity to eat food that you might have otherwise thrown away. These are free meals, as I like to call them. With panic in the economy, it makes so much sense to cut expenses and pay down as much … Continue reading

Managing Your Stockpile

Having a stockpile of food and household goods that you purchase on sale makes good sense, especially now when the prices on things keep going up and up. For example, I purchased an extra bulk box of laundry detergent for $20. The price today is $30 for the same box. That is a 50% increase! The bulk organic flour I purchased cost me $25 for 25 pounds. Today the price is $50, a 100 percent increase! I purchased cans of pizza sauce on sale for 59 cents. The price today is 99 cents. You see what I mean. But one … Continue reading

A Tale of Three Chickens

On Sunday, whole roasting chickens went on sale at our local grocery store for 99 cents a pound. While this isn’t a great deal, it is the best one that I have seen in the last two years in my neck of the woods, barring the very infrequent buy one get one free sales or raising the chickens myself. These were for a particular name brand roasting chicken that I find generally produces more breast meat for the same weight as the store brand chickens. So, I stocked up a bit by buying three of the meatiest ones available. Now … Continue reading

3 Fall Freezer Meal Ideas

Whenever the season of fall begins to peek through, I get a craving for doing some freezer cooking. These past mornings have been a little on the chilly side, and our skin breaks out in goose flesh as we wait for the bus in sweatshirts hastily thrown over t-shirts and shorts (the weather still warms back up during the day). Fall is a wonderful time to do some freezer cooking. You start looking forward to turning on that oven, you have a sense of gathering your nuts (stocking the freezer) before winter, and there are all sorts of great produce … Continue reading

Turkey as Diet Food

I know many of us consider turkey an annual binging food that we only see on Thanksgiving so what I am about to say may shock you. Turkey is an excellent diet food. Mind you, I said turkey, not turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and whipped cream. I’m a very busy mother of two boys so finding time to prepare healthy meals for myself between kiddie meals and bottles is practically an impossibility. Like most mothers, if I have nothing available that can be microwaved in less than two minutes and eaten, I usually fall back … Continue reading

Make Your Breadmaker Work for You

Even with the rising price of flour, having a breadmaker can be a very frugal thing, provided that you use it well. Of course, you can save lots of money by making your own breadmaker, but I personally find that it is a good investment because it really helps me fit home made bread and even freezer cooking into my busy day. Here are some tips that well help you make your breadmaker work for you. First of all, if you have a breadmaker, use it. There is nothing worse than an idle appliance. Be realistic. If you don’t use … Continue reading

Incorporating Freezer Cooking into Your Life

I greatly admire anyone who can do once a month cooking for freezer meals. I just can’t do that, nor do I want to make the effort of spending an entire day cooking, even it if means that I won’t have to cook for the rest of the month. In spite of my aversion to freezer cooking sessions, I still have a relatively full upright freezer full of meals for busy nights. How is this possible? I’ll tell you. I fill the freezer with meals by incorporating freezer cooking into my normal routine. First, I don’t plan out elaborate meals … Continue reading
