Happy Mother’s Day, Single Moms!

Celebrating Mother’s Day can be a bit more of a challenge for single mother’s. We do not have a significant other there to plan the day for us, and are often left to do the planning ourselves. You might even feel like planning the day yourself is a bit arrogant, but you should not feel this way at all. I’ll tell you why. Number one, you deserve to celebrate yourself as a mother. You do a job a lot of people would not want to do, or could not do. Number two, your children deserve a day to thank you … Continue reading

Does Your Baby Give Gifts On Holidays?

Since my daughter was born, I’ve had the joy of experiencing a number of holidays for the first time as a mother. There’s something about sharing big days with a child that make it so much more meaningful and exciting. Holidays we’ve shared so far include Halloween, where we laughed at how cute our baby looked in her costume; Christmas, where we bought our honey a myriad of presents, even though she wasn’t old enough to open them; and Easter, where we all cheered when we got a picture of our daughter smiling with her Easter basket. For those holidays, … Continue reading

Lessons from My Mother

I want to share a little bit about what I’ve learned about being and LDS woman and about motherhood from my mother since we’re so close to Mother’s Day. As Jane Austen wrote in Persuasion, she is “too modest for the world in general to be aware of half her accomplishments,” especially since some of her most important accomplishments have taken place inside the quiet workings of her own home. She has been my example for years; here are just a few of the things she’s taught me. I’ve learned to trust her opinions. Mom is real. She’s genuine, caring, … Continue reading

Photo Projects for Mother’s Day

It’s right around the corner you know. That’s right, Mother’s Day (it’s May 9 in the US, just in case you’re not a calendar-checking type and this is news to you). How are you going to celebrate the mothers in your life? While there are hundreds of gifts you could buy, why not create something for your mom (or moms) using photos? One of the many great things about moms is that they are often sentimental and photo-based gifts allow them to keep cherished memories close and even have something to brag about (you know what I’m talking about). So … Continue reading

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and you may be wondering what you can get your mom, wife or other loved one for Mother’s Day. This is a compilation of recipes from members all over the world. There are … Continue reading

What is the Big Deal about Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. The shops have stacks of cards and heart shaped decorations out. Yet in a recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald the marketing director of Hallmark, Amanda Del Prete, said, ‘We have had some women say if they want to get an anniversary card from their husband, they have to buy it themselves and give it to them. I think a few people have slipped their husbands some Valentine’s cards as well.’ Doesn’t that defeat the purpose? If he can’t be bothered or forgets or isn’t interested in buying a card, then what’s the point? … Continue reading

The Month of Mothers

Looking back over the month of May, I remember some very interesting conversations. I also remember reading some very interesting blogs, on diverse areas of Families.com and of our sister site Adoption.com. This twenty-first century method of “conversing” lets us read others’ thoughts, compose a reply with time to think about what we really mean, and read the reactions of many other people who may be very different from us. One of the conversations I read about at our sister site was about Birthmother’s Day. This day began to be celebrated in 1990 when a few birthmothers in Seattle gathered … Continue reading

My Mother’s Day

Some very good friends of mine did a VERY cute thing for me yesterday in honor of Mother’s Day. They went shopping on behalf of my fur-babies, Moose and Lally. My dogs (and my friends) know me well. I got two types of chocolate candy and some cocoa powder for when I make smoothies. (Cocoa powder plus mixed berries equals delicious smoothie!) But my favorite part was the card. The envelope reads “For Momma, From Moose.” Underneath that, it says “It’s really from ME! Lally.” The card inside features a brown dog (like my shepherd mix Moose) and a yellow … Continue reading

Courtney and Crew Present: Mother’s Day Merriment

Most Mother’s Days are fairly uneventful. Maybe Wayne (known as Papa to Murphy, Tabby, and Mr. Meow) will make breakfast in bed for me. Usually he tries to get cards that they can all write a nice sentiment in. (With his help of course.) Once in a while he gets flowers. Any and all of the above then become sources of merriment for the crew. Hopefully the flowers are roses, which are the cats’ favorite. Cards left unattended on countertops become prime shredding targets. (As do the envelopes which hopefully aren’t immediately discarded in the trash.) And breakfast? Begging time! … Continue reading
