Who’s Terrorizing Dolphins?

As if the sea life in the Gulf Coast hasn’t already been traumatized enough with the BP oil spill, now someone is mutilating and killing dolphins. The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) in Gulfport, Alabama found a dolphin without a lower jaw.  The week before that, a dolphin with gunshot wounds was discovered.  Another dolphin turned up dead having been stabbed with a screwdriver.  There was even a dolphin that had its tail cut off.  All in all, six dolphins have been killed since the past few months. I’ve never understood how someone can kill an animal, especially one … Continue reading

Latest BP Oil Spill News

President Obama put the smack down on BP the other day, saying the company would put $20 billion in a fund that would go to those affected by the Gulf oil spill. BP won’t have to cough up all the money at once to prevent a panic among investors. But, investors got bad news as BP announced it would not pay any dividends for the rest of 2010. There was a payment scheduled for June 21 which was for about $2.6 million which has since been cancelled. The oil continues to flow out of the broken rig. Scientists have estimated … Continue reading

FTC Warns Businesses and Consumers of Oil Scams

Scammers never take a holiday and that is true of the BP oil spill as well. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warned both businesses and consumers this week of potential scams related to the oil spill. The FTC is cautioning people to take care when approached by someone claiming they are raising money or offering remediation services related to the oil spill. Scams may come through emails, flyers, mailers, telephone calls, or even door-to-door solicitation. These people may tell you that they are collecting money for an organization such as the Humane Society or a food bank to help those … Continue reading

Oil Spill Cancels Weddings and Angers Travelers with Insurance

The news just never gets any better with this BP oil spill, does it? The other day I blogged about the oil spill ruining vacation spots along the Gulf coast, but there’s one thing I didn’t think about – beach weddings. That’s right, the oil spill is now cancelling weddings. Meggie Fleming had her dream wedding planned for August 28th on the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama. Now, she is planning her wedding all over again, this time close to home in Decatur, Alabama. She and her fiance Tyler Thacker had been waiting to see what was going to happen … Continue reading

Planning Your Vacation Around the Oil Spill

The other day, I told my husband we should go to the beach here in Jacksonville, N.C. He agreed, saying that we should go before the oil gets here. Sadly, he was only half joking. Many Gulf tourist destinations are seeing oil in the water and on the beaches. Florida’s Emerald Coast seems to be holding up to its name, at least for now. While the Emerald Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau said that some small pieces of tar turned up on the Henderson Beach State Park last weekend, they were easily removed and no more oil has been seen. … Continue reading

Possible Gulf Coast Cleanup Solution Comes from…Kevin Costner?

The oil is still spewing out of the broken rig in the Gulf Coast almost a month after the accident. And, it is not like BP has not been receiving ideas on what to do to stop it. Approximately 10,000 ideas have come in from the public. While some are not feasible, BP has said that they are looking at around 700 of the solutions. However, a fix of how to clean up the oil may come from an unlikely source. When what was formerly the worst U.S. oil spill, the Exxon Valdez incident, occurred in 1989, actor Kevin Costner … Continue reading
