Coupons From My Health Insurance Company?

Has this ever happened to you? I got a large envelope from my health insurance company in the mail today. It wasn’t a bill, and it wasn’t a “letter of doom”. Enclosed were several coupons that I can take to the grocery store. That was unexpected! I, like many others, have a love-hate relationship with my health insurance company. I love that I didn’t have to come up with the entire cost of my Epi-Pen this year out of pocket – I hate that my insurer didn’t help out with much of the cost. I love that being insured means … Continue reading

A Healthy Diet Could Help With ADHD – But is Not a Cure

A recent study found that a way to improve the behavior of kids who have ADHD is to get them to eat a healthier diet. This advice is not designed to be a primary treatment method for ADHD. Could something as simple as a healthy diet be an effective way to lessen the symptoms of ADHD? In the 1970’s, Dr. Benjamin Feingold wrote a book called “Why Your Child is Hyperactive”. Dr. Feingold was a pediatrician and an allergist. The diet he described in his book is now commonly referred to as The Feingold Diet. The basic concept of this … Continue reading

Health Food Store DOs and DON’Ts

Across America you can find more than thirty-five thousand health food stores. But just because something is available at the health food store doesn’t mean it’s better than what is in your regular grocery store. Health food store DOs: Do take advantage of the dairy and nondairy selections to get plenty of calcium in your diet. You’ll find the usual milk and yogurt and cheeses that you’re used to from the usual grocery store, plus more exotic or unusual offerings like soy and rice-based dairy products and yogurt made from sheep’s or goat’s milk. Do investigate (and try) vegetarian meats … Continue reading

Why Kids with Autism May Need Vitamin Supplements

The new theory of autism is that it is a whole-body disease and not just a brain disorder. Autism, which is said to be linked to autoimmune illness and disorders of the GI tract, may also cause abnormal enzyme function, and thus inadequate digestion and nutrient absorption. Most of us already have observed that many kids with autism have very particular tastes in foods, preferring to eat the same things repeatedly and refusing to try anything new. So right from the start, these children are often at a nutritional disadvantage. But even if they did have a healthy diet, their … Continue reading

What your hair can tell you about your health

A couple of years ago, I started finding that my once thick, long, almost perfect hair was falling out in clumps, breaking easily, and thinning considerably. I’d just had my daughter and spent a month in and out of hospital with pancreas and kidney problems caused by a trapped gallstone – so I assumed it was because, of course, my body didn’t have enough vitamins to support my hair. I guessed right, but its taken far longer to restore even some of than balance than I ever expected. When your hair changes texture, or starts falling out in noticeable amounts, … Continue reading

Seventeen Weeks

At seventeen weeks I find myself feeling extremely well. My Nausea has subsided and my energy has returned to near its full force. Most of my major food aversions have passed and I find myself wanting chocolate again, which is something I need to keep in check! Thanks to my lack of nausea and increased energy, I have been exercising five to six times per week and reaping the benefits of toned muscles! My stomach is bulging a bit more than normal and some of my tops are a little tight in the stomach, but maternity tops are still much … Continue reading

Returning Fertility

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of research about returning fertility. It is such an interesting topic and you will find many different conflicting opinions on the subject, especially when it has to do with moms who are still nursing their babies or toddlers. Some will insist that a mother must wean in order to conceive again. Others, especially those who strongly promote breastfeeding, insist that weaning is unnecessary and fertility will return when the body is ready. I also came across a third point of view, which has nothing to do with breastfeeding or weaning, and more to do … Continue reading

Probiotics in Pregnancy

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria or yeasts that naturally exist in the intestinal tract. Taking probiotics is said to promote digestion and general health. Recent research suggests there may be another benefit to taking probiotics. A study in Finland looked at a link between taking probiotics and obesity during pregnancy, as well as post pregnancy weight loss. The researchers at the University of Turku discovered that women who took probiotics during pregnancy had less belly fat and a lower percentage of body fat a year after the birth than women not taking supplements. The participants were divided into three groups. One … Continue reading

The Importance of Zinc in Pregnancy

Once you become pregnant, you begin to pay a lot more attention to your diet than ever before. Mom and baby need a broad range of nutrients for health and proper development. One important and often overlooked nutrient in the prenatal diet is zinc. Zinc is important for every stage along the road to parenthood, including conception. Zinc is an essential nutrient for sperm production in the man and healthy and regular ovulation in the woman. Once pregnancy is achieved, zinc is important throughout the development of the baby for cell growth and for the immune system of mom and … Continue reading
