Pop Culture Roundup – May 24, 2010

It has been a bizarre week for pop culture, even by Hollywood standards. Here are a few of the things that have happened: Brittany Murphy’s Husband Found Dead Simon Monjack, widower of Brittany Murphy, was found dead Sunday night at the couple’s home in Hollywood. Right now, officials are saying the 39-year-old Monjack died of natural causes, but there will be an investigation. Monjack was discovered by Brittany’s mother Sharon, who has shared the home with him since Brittany’s death. Anyone really surprised by this? We often criticize people for not grieving enough after a death, but this man seemed … Continue reading

Celebrities Who Have Lost Children

As I read the headlines about Mike Tyson’s daughter, Exodus, dying after being strangled by the cord on a treadmill, it made me realize that celebrities don’t always have the charmed lives we believe they do. Many have suffered what many consider the worst thing that can happen – the loss of a child. One of the most recent celebrity child tragedy was that of John and Kelly Travolta’s son Jett, who died of a seizure in January 2009, but there have been plenty more. Some were results of accidents, some of overdoses, and some of diseases, but all were … Continue reading

Actors that Turned Down Iconic Roles – Part Three

Okay, I promise I will stop after this one! I just find it fascinating to think of certain actors in certain roles: John Cusack as John Bender in The Breakfast Club? No doubt that Judd Nelson was perfect in this role, but how would John Cusack have faired? It certainly didn’t hurt his career to miss this role. Judd Nelson on the other hand… Bruce Willis as Sam Wheat in Ghost? Yep, apparently this one was given to Bruce Willis to read first, but he thought playing a ghost would be bad for his career. Wait, didn’t he play a … Continue reading

More Questions about Jett Travolta’s Health and Possible Extortion Plot

As if it weren’t bad enough to lose a child, now the Travoltas have to deal an alleged extortion plot. Paramedic Tarino Lightbourne as well as Bahamian Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchombe, and lawyer/Senator Pleasant Bridgewater have all been detained for attempted extortion. Lightbourne drove Jett Travolta to the hospital and has told his story to “Good Morning America” as well as several tabloids. “It was me, him [John], and Jett. I’ll never forget this day. I saw him lean over and hug his son and kiss his son and tell him he loved him and I did everything I … Continue reading

John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s Son Jett Dies

Wow, what a tragedy for the Travolta family – their 16 year old son Jett died today while the family, which includes eight year old daughter Ella Bleu, was celebrating the New Year in the Bahamas. While at the family vacation home at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island, Jett suffered a seizure. Photo, from the 1976 film Boy in the Plastic Bubble, is in the public domain because the copyright has expired. He hit his head on the bathtub and was found unconscious by a caretaker around 10 a.m. this morning. Medical responders attempted to revive … Continue reading

Longest Celebrity Marriages

People joke about celebrity marriages being between two members of a different species rather than two members of the human race. In other words, one actual year of marriage can be translated into 10 celebrity marriage years, as if these people were dogs or cats. Now granted, I am sure the pressure in a celebrity marriage must be astronomical. Everyone is focused on every little thing celebrities do, and I am sure things get misconstrued, leading to more problems. But every marriage has its weaknesses and its strengths, and celebrity, like anything else, might be able to pull two people … Continue reading

Travolta Sounds Off on Psychiatry

Do you remember two years ago when Tom Cruise had his psychiatry rant with Matt Lauer? Tom said, “Psychiatry is a pseudo science” and argued with Matt, saying, “You don’t know the history of psychiatry. I do.” Cruise, a Scientologist, felt that post-partum depression should not be treated with medication – he used Brooke Shields as an example – but with “vitamins and through exercise and various things.” If you missed the interview, you can still read the entire transcript at the MSNBC web page. Now, almost two years to the day after that interview, John Travolta is coming out … Continue reading

Celebrity Baby Watch

There was a time (I’d like to say not long ago, but it more like a lifetime ago) when I thought basketball great Grant Hill and I would make the perfect couple. After all, we are the same age, we both love sports, and… well, it doesn’t matter now. We both ended up marrying other people and as it turns out Hill is now counting down the days until his second child is born. Hill’s wife, R&B singer Tamia (who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2003) recently announced they are expecting a new addition to the family. “I’m happy … Continue reading

Unique Donations From Household Names

He’s the “Grey’s Anatomy” star who has landed on the cover of multiple entertainment magazines. He’s no stranger to controversy and recently (perhaps as a result of the controversy) he has become a familiar face on the celebrity charity circuit. These days actor Isaiah Washington is making headlines once again, but this time it’s for a very unique donation he made to aid a project that aims to detail the Atlantic slave trade. Washington told news reporters he traced his ancestral roots to Sierra Leone through DNA testing, consequently he decided to donate $25,000 to a computer animation project that … Continue reading
