Berkeley Showdown Heats Up

The other day, I posted a blog about the city of Berkeley telling the Marines at the Recruiting Station there they were “uninvited and unwelcome intruders.” Well, as you know, there are very seldom anti-war protesters without pro-troops protesters showing up as well. In fact, Jacksonville just went through that a few weeks ago when Westboro Baptist Church members showed up in an anti-Marine Corps protest following the recent murder of Camp Lejeune Marine Maria Lauterbach. Not a smart move in a town that boasts about 45,000 military – the six church members were greatly outnumbered by the pro-Marine supporters. … Continue reading

What NOT To Donate To Toys For Tots

If you plan to make a donation to the Marine Reserves’ annual Toys for Tots program, you can cross the “Talking Jesus Doll” off your gift giving list. The charity has decided against accepting the doll because of its religious nature. The decision comes after a suburban Los Angeles company offered to donate 4,000 of the foot-tall dolls, which quote Bible verses. The toy company planned to make the donation so the dolls could be distributed by the Marines to needy children this holiday season. The battery-powered Jesus is one of several dolls manufactured by the California company–one2believe–a division of … Continue reading

Meatloaf Muffins with Barbecue Sauce and Smashed Potatoes

I love meatloaf. Fortunately (because I like to cook it frequently), so does my husband. Even when I was on Atkins, I substituted the cracker crumbs with pork rinds and continued making meatloaf. Today, I found this great recipe from Rachael Ray’s 30 Minute Meals site called Meatloaf muffins served with smashed potatoes. I cannot wait to try this recipe! For both these recipes, you will need about 1 2/3 pounds of ground sirloin, one medium onion, celery, a green bell pepper, eggs, milk, breadcrumbs, Montreal Steak Seasoning, barbecue sauce, tomato salsa, Worcestershire sauce, extra-virgin olive oil, 2 1/2 pounds … Continue reading

Ways to Thank the Troops

Supporting military troops has always been an important issue with me. Many members of my family serve or have served their country so, from a young age, I learned what it was like to have a family member possibly in harm’s way and the sacrifices they give. When I married an Air Force member the realities of military life and what deployed troops endure became even more evident. I would like to share with you some resources through which people can support the troops that are currently overseas defending our freedom. Network for Good– This website has a section where … Continue reading

The Hero Behind the Uniform

What is a soldier? If asked most would give the brief description of a man or a woman who wears the military uniform and serves their country. This is a fine description if you’re trying to pick the soldier out of a crowd of nuns but it hardly describes the person behind the uniform. Of course we’re all unique, and even the same haircut and clothing can’t take that away from our troops (though boot camp does attempt to come close). Yet, I can’t help but think that there must be something deep down inside of each soldier that, when … Continue reading
