Oops! It Happened Again—Miss USA Takes a Dive

Not AGAIN! You don’t have to know a stitch about beauty pageants to know that a contestant’s job is relatively straightforward: Smile, look good, and don’t say anything you’ll regret later. Oh, and being able to remain upright on heels helps too. For those of you who missed it, for the second year in a row, Miss USA took a tumble as she tried to make her way across the stage during the evening gown competition at last night’s Miss Universe competition. In front of millions of TV viewers around the world Miss USA Crystle Stewart, a 26-year-old Texan, tripped … Continue reading

Star Gigs—Inmates Running the Asylum

Anyone who tunes into the 2008 Miss Universe pageant next month has got to wonder who was in charge of casting. The beauty competition is set to air on NBC July 13th and when it does two of the most unlikely people in Hollywood will be presiding over it. Pageant organizers just announced that Jerry Springer and Melanie Brown (a.k.a. Mel B of the Spice Girls) will co-host the annual pretty girl fest. What? Let me see if I’ve got this right… you have a show that is taking place in Nha Trang, Vietnam and being beamed around the world … Continue reading

Miss Universe The Next “Hero?”

I admit; I was thrilled when Miss Japan was crowned Miss Universe last month. (Yeah, me and half the population of Hawaii.) Twenty-year-old Riyo Mori is attractive, multi-lingual, and, hey, you can’t help but cheer for the underdog (the only other time Japan has won the pageant was in 1959, when Akiko Kojima became the first Miss Universe from Asia). If you enjoyed watching Mori strut her stuff on stage as much as I did, I have good news. You may be seeing a lot more of the beauty queen on American TV. The new Miss Universe says she is … Continue reading

The Fall Seen Around The World… Over and Over and Over and Over Again

If I see one more newscast replay the video of Miss USA Rachel Smith slipping and landing on her bottom during last night’s Miss Universe pageant I’m going to scream. If that’s how I feel imagine what the Tennessee native must be going through the night after what has got to be one of her most embarrassing moments to date. If you missed the unfortunate incident you obviously have been living under a rock… I mean… you obviously must not watch television… I mean—well, here’s what you missed: while Smith was modeling her evening gown during last night’s live telecast … Continue reading

Fashion Files: Miss Mexico’s Controversial Pageant Gown

Typically, it’s the swimsuit portion of the Miss Universe pageant that draws the most attention, but not this year. Thanks to Miss Mexico, it’s the national costume portion of the televised beauty pageant that has lips flapping and fingers wagging. According to news reports, Miss Mexico is being forced to tone down her Miss Universe pageant dress because of its religious connotations. The floor-length dress made of traditional natural cotton called manta is accented with crosses, scapulars and a sketch of a man facing a firing squad—all of which reportedly outraged Mexicans. The designers who helped select the dress argued … Continue reading
