The Great Megapixel Debate

Lately in the digital photography world, there has been a lot of discussion, rumors and theories that are being changed, edited and tested to the extreme. The biggest debate at the moment seems to be that of the megapixel and how it effects the results of your photographic image. In theory, the greater amount of megapixels the camera takes, the better the results. However, many photographers are putting that theory to the test, and dispelling a major myth. In The Megapixel Myth, photographer Ken Rockwell tested several different camera’s with differing megapixels, claiming that he has gotten the same results … Continue reading

Dispelling Scrapbooking Misconceptions

Scrapbook classes always afford me a chance to get to hear what others are doing in scrapbooking and on their layouts. However in addition, they also afford me a chance to hear about the different ways people perceive scrapbooking and how they use it in their everyday lives. Recently at a basic scrapbooking class I taught, I met an older woman who wanted to find out what scrapbooking was all about. She was taking the class just to see how it could help her with her family genealogy. I think she took a lot more away from the class than … Continue reading

Misinformation About Homeschooling: Don’t Believe the Hype!

In my article, Don’t Believe Everything You Read About Homeschooling, I talked about misinformation homeschoolers might find on the internet about homeschooling. Now that I have discussed outright lies that are damaging to homeschooling, I will follow with exaggerations made in the favor of the homeschooler. While many of the wonderful things said about homeschoolers are true, exaggerations are also made in favor of homeschooling: Our children will not be bullied: This is not necessarily true. The truth is that our child will not be repeatedly bullied as we can choose to cut a bully out of our child’s life, … Continue reading

Misinformation About Homeschooling: Don’t Believe the Lies!

In my article, Don’t Believe Everything You Read About Homeschooling,I talked about misinformation homeschoolers might find on the internet about homeschooling. I have now decided to discuss outright lies that are damaging to homeschooling, which I will follow with exaggerations made in the favor of the homeschooler. Lies About Homeschoolers: Homeschooling is great academically, but children can turn out as social misfits: I want to scream and tear out my hair every time I hear this, but then I would look like a social misfit. Perhaps there was a child somewhere who left his homeschooling experience shy and withdrawn. Perhaps … Continue reading

Don’t Believe Everything You Read About Homeschooling

When searching for information on homeschooling, please consider the source from which your information comes. I am a subscriber to Google Alerts and get a daily list of anything recently published on homeschooling, home school, homeschool, and home education. I have several problems with items featured in these alerts: Automated Articles: The information I get about homeschooling on Google alerts often appears to be automatically generated. There are programs that many online “writers” use to generate slightly altered duplicates of the same article. The information that results from these programs is rudimentary at best. It is doubtful that the sites … Continue reading

Fun Health Myths

My six year old son was doing a research project. He wanted to find out more about poisonous ladybugs. How he decided ladybugs were poisonous is beyond me. When we looked it up, it turns out that they are. The catch is you’d have to eat several hundred of them to even feel sick. While we were researching ladybugs I ran across a piece of folk lore from France: If you are ill and a ladybug lands on you, when it flies away it will take the illness with it. Where’s a ladybug when you need one? This little tidbit … Continue reading

Bigfoot or Big Hoax?

For about two months in the late 70’s I bought into the “Legend of Bigfoot”—I was eight years old at the time and my older brother had borrowed a book on the myths of Bigfoot from the library. It was all he could talk about for weeks. I thought about that book a few days ago–currently our city is all a stir about a recent Bigfoot sighting that occurred not far from here. Typically, I dismiss these “water cooler” type stories, but yesterday the news ended up being picked up by various national media outlets. Let me back up… last … Continue reading

Genuine concern exists for parents about the weight of their children. We hear a news story every single day about childhood obesity. We hear about what we need to be afraid of and in some cases, what we need to do as parents to protect our children. Today, I want to talk about some of the myths associated with overweight children. Childhood Obesity Needs a Quick Fix It would be nice if there were an instant fix to all fitness issues, especially obesity.
