Family-Friendly Attractions In Charlotte, North Carolina

Like many travelers, my first introduction to Charlotte, North Carolina came during a business trip. At that time I didn’t have the ability (or desire) to visit all of the area’s most popular family-friendly attractions (I didn’t have children back then). I didn’t know what I was missing. And neither will you until you step foot into some of these kid-friendly attractions that cater to the curious child in all of us. Discovery Place The Discovery Place is a hands-on science and learning center located a few blocks north of “The Square” (the city’s oldest intersection in the heart of … Continue reading

Marriage Laws – North & South Carolina

As we continue our journey across the United States and reviewing the marriage laws of each individual state, we haven’t quite finished with the Eastern seaboard. We’ll wrap those up today and tomorrow with a look at North Carolina, South Carolina as well as Georgia and Florida. So without further ado, let’s take a break in the Carolinas and look at their marriage laws. Family Travel: When Is It Too Early To Start Planning For Your Next Trip?

My answer: NEVER. Let’s face it, life moves fast. (My two-year-old just told me she needed a new doctor’s kit because the one she has doesn’t have “an otoscope with a light.”) So it’s no wonder with work schedules to plan around, a family budget to juggle, and relatives to appease, I plan for our family vacations months in advance. For example, we just returned from spending a few weeks visiting my parents, grandmother and siblings in Hawaii. While we were out there I began researching family-friendly fall vacation destinations. Here are two, which currently top our list: Grandfather Mountain … Continue reading

The Haunting of the Battleship North Carolina

I love a good ghost story and I stumbled upon one this weekend. My best friend Ralph came into town and he likes to see historical sites, so we decided to visit the Battleship North Carolina in Wilmington. Once on board, I realized why I never joined the Navy. I am sure modern day ships are quite different, but this relic from World War II was crowded, dark, and a bit creepy. As we went from level to level, Ralph commented that he bet this ship was haunted. Once we were through with the tour, we visited the gift shop. … Continue reading

Homeschooling in North Carolina

This is not legal advice. As someone who lives in a state that is highly regulated, I cannot emphasize enough the need for you to advocate for yourself and make a point to know your state laws. While the school district will most likely provide you with a printed copy of the laws and regulations for home schooling, a local home schooling group can be a valuable asset when it comes to navigating your way through the system. In North Carolina, a home school is defined as: “. . .a non-public school in which one or more children of not … Continue reading

North Carolina-Style Pulled Pork

I will be the first to admit that I am a bit of a barbecue snob. When you are raised in Memphis, home of the world’s best barbecue, it is hard to move other places and enjoy their barbecue. Different areas of the country have very different ideas on what exactly to barbecue (pork or beef) and how to barbecue it. I’ve been disappointed with barbecue I’ve had everywhere outside of Memphis with the exception of North Carolina. It is pork (which is important to me – Memphis barbecue is always pork). For this recipe, you will need a pork … Continue reading
