Insurance in Ohio Now Covers Autism Treatment

The Governor of Ohio, John Kasich, has announced that many health insurance plans in the state will now cover autism services. This is excellent news for families who have been struggling to pay for the treatment their child requires without the help of their health insurance company. There is no cure for autism, but there are some forms of treatment that can help with certain symptoms. Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA therapy, is one that can help. It is a scientifically validated approach to understanding behavior and how it is affected by environment. In “plain English”, it can help children … Continue reading

Super Summer Fun: Wet and Wild Waterparks (Midwest)

In a previous blog I briefly described the devastating toll the recent Midwest floods took on tourist hot spots such as the Wisconsin Dells. At the time I wrote that entry managers at the resort’s largest waterparks were desperately trying to get the word out that they were still open for business and looking to entertain the legions of families that flock to the Dells on an annual basis. I’ll have more details on the impact the floods are having on the region in a future blog, but in this post I want to continue with my series on the … Continue reading

Travel Tales: Kids Rebel Against High Gas Prices

My daughter is far too young to understand that skyrocketing gas prices are just one of the reasons we can’t afford to drive to Chicago everyday to see her finned friends at the aquarium. And even if she did comprehend what gas prices have done to our household budget I’m still not convinced she would take on the project two sisters in Salt Lake City did recently. Nine-year-old Sadie and 7-year-old Pyper Vance are rebelling against record high gas prices. The sisters aren’t even old enough to have their learner’s permit, yet they say they are as sick of the … Continue reading

Luckily there are some sectors of the travel industry that are helping families salvage their summer vacations. Several … Continue reading

Serious Family Fun—Spending Spring Break at an Indoor Waterpark

Our neighbors have two young sons who start counting down to their school’s spring break the day after New Year’s. Since they live in Wisconsin and cannot afford to take off from work and fly to Hawaii during the week-long school break they have made a family tradition of driving to Wisconsin Dells a.k.a. “The Waterpark Capital of the World.” The area is filled with dozens of indoor waterparks. Vacationing there gives the boys a chance to spend time in the water no matter how much snow is on the ground or what the thermometer might read. And while the … Continue reading

Have you made your travel plans for the New Year? Our family plans to spend part of 2008 flying 5,000 miles to reunite with family in Hawaii. In addition, we will keep with tradition and take shorter trips to visit other attractions near our home. In the coming weeks I plan to use this blog to profile unique events taking place around the world. Some may be happening in places you’ve always dreamed of traveling to while others may be occurring near your hometown. Either way I hope they inspire you to make 2008 a year of adventure. Traveling to … Continue reading
