Parents Are Naming Their Babies After Instagram Filters

Parents tend to put a lot of thought into the names that they will give their babies. Often, a baby will be given the name of an ancestor. Sometimes, baby names are influenced by pop culture. For the first time ever, the internet appears to be a source of inspiration for baby names. Parents are actually naming their babies after Instagram filters. BabyCenter puts together an annual list of the most popular baby names of the year. The names that make the list are the ones that were given to the most children in a specific year. The trendy Instagram … Continue reading

Who Is Justin Bieber and What Has He Done With My Daughter?

I have only one daughter who is just about to turn 13-years-old. My youngest son is about to turn 11 and my oldest son will be 16-years-old. So far the teen years have been fairly easy with my teenage son, nothing I can’t handle. When he developed his first interest in a girl I thought it was cute. I thought it would help prepare me for my daughter’s first interests in boys but it didn’t. There is just something about girls that raises your alert level a bit higher. While girls in her middle school had already begun “going out,” … Continue reading

This Week in History – March 15, 1970

This blog goes back a ways. Some of the younger viewers will see this as a time capsule while the older viewers will say “Hey, I remember that!” As I grow older, I tend to forget just how different things have been through my lifetime, so I thought a weekly “This Week in Pop History” blog would be fun. So, March 15, 1970 – let’ start by seeing who is playing in Las Vegas: Jerry Lewis is at Caesars Palace, Don Ho is at the Flamingo, Wayne Newton is at the Frontier, Roger Miller is at the Riviera, and Flip … Continue reading

I Don’t Think I’m Supposed to be Hip on Modern Music

The other day, I wrote about how much my kids just don’t get MY music, so I thought it would be only fair for me to talk about how surprisingly out of touch I am when it comes to what they listen to. I say “surprisingly” because I always fancied myself to be rather hip. I listened to pop music, I used to know all the bands and which musician was in what band before, and who influenced whom. I guess I blinked, or played the same Melissa Etheridge album over and over a few too many times, because the … Continue reading

This Week in Television – July 9, 2007

Tonight, the “World Series of Pop Culture” returns to VH1. In case you haven’t seen it, the “World Series of Pop Culture” is a game show tournament that features – what else? – pop culture questions. Teams compete against each other for the final prize – $250,000! The show is made up of rounds. Each team must send one player and he or she must attempt to answer all the questions in that round. What type of categories do they have? Stuff that I consider fun like “Family TV,” “1980s Teen Comedy Films,” “Tom Cruise Movies,” “1990s Lyrics,” “Fictional Locales,” … Continue reading

Pop Culture and Religion–Part 1

Pop culture and religion. Some recent moves in the entertainment industry make it appear that one is looking to promote the other. But, as we all know, looks can be deceiving. Just a few days ago two major announcements were made involving the entertainment world (movies, the Internet, and believe it or not, cellphones) and “religious material.” In part one of “Pop Culture and Religion” I will discuss the recent movie news that may bring a smile to the faces of parents who are constantly looking for something “decent” to view with their children: In a move it is calling … Continue reading

Bye Bye Bart–China Bans Simpsons From Airwaves

Popular culture is taking another hit in China. If you can’t live without your daily fix of Bart and Homer Simpson, Teletubbies, or Pokemon you may want to hold off on traveling to the country known for its Great Wall and other cultural wonders. According to news reports, beginning September 1st, all foreign cartoons, including “The Simpsons,” “Pokemon,” and “Blues Clues” will be barred from Chinese TV during primetime (5 to 8 p.m.) in an effort to protect the country’s struggling animation studios. According to Chinese newspapers communist leaders are said to be frustrated that so many cartoons are foreign-made, … Continue reading

Why Christie Brinkley Kicked Her Husband To The Curb

A few days ago I blogged about Christie Brinkley’s surprise split from her husband of 10 years Peter Cook. At the time of the announcement no reason was given for Brinkley’s decision to file for divorce. Now, a New York newspaper says it has uncovered the reason why Brinkley kicked her husband out of their Hampton mansion. The New York Post reports that Cook has been having an affair with a 19-year-old who he allegedly promised he would dump his supermodel wife for. But, that’s just the beginning of what the paper reports is a long list of “poor decisions” … Continue reading

Young Love = Rockin’ Wedding

To most people she’s best known for her Grammy-nominated album, but around our home she’s better known as the voice of the possum in the animated film “Over the Hedge.” Now, Avril Lavinge can add new bride to her list of accomplishments. PEOPLE magazine reports that Lavinge and her boyfriend of two years, Deryck Whibley wed Saturday afternoon in California surrounded by dozens of family and friends from their native Canada. The magazine reports that Lavinge wore a Vera Wang wedding gown and carried a bouquet of white roses. The couple took advantage of the beautiful summer weather during their … Continue reading

The Television Exercise Game

If you are familiar with any aspect of Pop Culture then you may or may not have heard of the various drinking games associated with different pop culture shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek: The Next Generation and more. While I am not endorsing the alcohol portion of the game, I am going to shamelessly steal the idea for a great television exercise game that we can play! Exercise on Cue Choose your exercise du jour of the evening. Perhaps you’d like to do sit ups, push-ups or bicep curls. Whatever exercise you want to choose for this … Continue reading
