Primary Time: Helping Your Children Adjust to a New Ward

Moving can be difficult for everyone involved. It often means a new school, a new home, new friends and a new ward. It can be scary to go to a new ward, especially for children. Teenagers may also have a difficult time adjusting to a new ward. Often groups and friendships have already been established, and people may not be as willing to welcome new people to their groups. Here are five tips for helping your children to adjust to a new ward. First take them to Primary on the first week there. If you do not change what is … Continue reading

Primary Time: Missionary Work

Sharing the gospel with others is an important part of the teachings of the church. As we do this we are not force our beliefs on others, but rather open the door for them to ask questions and to learn as much as they feel comfortable learning. Primary children can also participate in inviting friends and loved ones to learn more about the church. You can have your children invite friends to participate in family home evenings and family activity nights. One great way to do this is to invite the entire family to participate not just the friend. This … Continue reading

Primary Time: Focus on Easter

Easter is just around the corner, and it is one of the most important holidays that we celebrate. Teaching our children about Eater is important. It is time to learn about the Atonement, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus. Unfortunately commercialism often gets in the way of celebrating the true meaning of Easter. You can bring your children’s focus on Easter back to the real meaning of the holiday through several different means. The first and easiest thing to do is to separate the Easter Bunny and other commercial type celebrations from the celebration that you have on Sunday. This allows … Continue reading

Primary Time: Tips for Successful Quarterly Activities

Primary quarterly activities are a great way to encourage spirituality and to allow the children to build friendships with each other. There needs to be a good balance that allows the children to interact with each other in a fun and positive way that is different from church each Sunday. The activities should take place once a quarter and should focus on the year’s theme. It is a good idea to have at least one activity focus on service each year. Many wards often have one of the activities focus on the pioneers in the summer, but that is optional. … Continue reading

Primary Time: Teaching a New Class

One of the great things about a new year is getting a new class to teach if you are a Primary or a Sunday school teacher. It is always hard to say good-bye to students that you have grown to care about, but it is also nice to start out fresh and to get new students as well. If you are beginning to teach with a new set of students it is important to get off to a good start. Here are a few suggestions. First if you are teaching Primary, then introducing yourself to the children before the first … Continue reading

Teaching Children Gratitude

This time of year is a great time to focus on being thankful. It is also a good time to teach your children to be thankful, and to set up traditions and habits that can carry gratitude over into the entire year. Here are four ways that you can show your gratitude and teach your children to do the same. One way you can do this is to start a family tradition of sharing three things you are grateful for at Sunday dinner each day. This is carrying the Thanksgiving tradition of expressing thanks throughout the year. If you give … Continue reading

The Church Introduces a New Nursery Manual

For the past several years, nursery leaders and Sunbeam leaders have been teaching from the same manual. This hasn’t been a bad thing – our curriculum, as always, is inspired and our children have greatly benefited from the lessons they are taught. This last month, however, the Church released a new manual designed specifically for the nursery. The manual is entitled “Behold Your Little Ones” and has thirty lessons that are geared specifically to nursery-aged children (eighteen months to three years). In addition to full-color photographs to go along with each topic, the lessons have a line drawing that can … Continue reading

This month the theme for sharing time is “The temple is a blessing for me and my family.” The song is “I Love to See the Temple.” The scripture is “And verily I say unto you, let this house be built unto my name, that I may reveal mine ordinances therein unto my people” (Doctrine and Covenants 124:40). The theme is divided into four principles the first principle focuses on living worthily to be able to attend the temple. The second principle teaches the children that tithing is used to help build the temples. The third principle teaches about the … Continue reading

Primary Time: Handling Difficult Classes

If you have taught Primary, you know that the kids have good days and bad days. There are classes however where it really is a struggle to maintain a positive learning atmosphere. If you are in a situation like this or you have a teacher who is struggling in this way there are ways to cope with the situation. My first primary teaching experience was pretty wild. I had a class of boys and one girl. They tried to climb out of the window. They would run into walls (on purpose) and they were pretty crazy. Now they are all … Continue reading

Primary Time: Scripture Study for Your Children

I remember when my parents began having family scripture study. I was in first or second grade. They kept it short, each person who could read, read one verse. At that rate it took us years to read the Book of Mormon. However, the biggest benefit was that it made us comfortable reading the scriptures. I know that most of my sisters and brothers read the scriptures on their own now, and that they started when they were children. When you read aloud at home, you are not as uncomfortable when you make a mistake. It makes reading in front … Continue reading
