Veterans Day: A Little History

It seems that a lot of people get confused when it comes to Veterans Day. Part of the reason may be because it has changed over the years. The date has been changed as well as the name. The original holiday was celebrated as a day of peace, and was known as Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I. Do you know what Veterans Day is? Do you know why it’s important? It is the day where we show appreciation, or give thanks, to all the brave people that fought in wars to help keep our country safe. Happy Veteran’s Day and my sincere thanks to all those who have defended this country and the freedoms we so often take for granted. Patriotic Crafts for Veterans Day

Here are some more crafts to help celebrate Veterans Day: Veterans Day Wreath You may have never heard of making a wreath for Veteran’s Day, but that’s okay. Wreaths can be for any occasion. Things you will need: Smooth wreath form Glue Cardstock or construction paper (red, white, and blue) Scissors Ribbon or yarn Small flag or flag picture *An embroider hoop or even a sturdy foam or paper plate will also work in place of wreath form. Salute to American Veterans Crafts

This week begins National Veterans Awareness Week, beginning November 5th and ending November 11th with Veterans Day, which is celebrated on this date each year. It has been recognized on this date since the 1950’s. President Bush asked all of us to honor our Veterans, the heroes that have fought to protect our country. We can help remember our Veterans by making crafts from patriotic symbols, to salute them. Yom Hazikaron / Yom Hashoah

On the 4th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar, is a day of remembrance for all the fallen. The name of this day is called Yom Hazikaron or “The Day of Remembrance.” This day can be considered in the American calendar as Veterans Day. Another day, which comes before, is called Yom Hashoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day on the 27th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan or this year April 25th.
