Seven Years Later: Thoughts on the Pets of 9/11

Over in Marriage I wrote about what I think about on September 11 as it pertains to love and relationships. But another loving relationship I think about today is the one so many of us have with our animals. Last year I wrote about the pets of 9/11. I did a little research into finding out if all the pets belonging to people affected by the attacks were okay. They were. Today as I contemplate the events of September 11, 2001, I’m thinking about the pets and people who survived. (I guess I should be clear here. Only one pet, … Continue reading

What I Think About on 9/11

When I think about September 11, 2001, I don’t think of the terrorists. I don’t think about the conspiracy theories floating around out there that our own government is responsible for the attacks. I don’t think about how much it changed our world and how we live in it basically overnight. No, when I think about the events that happened on September 11, 2001, my mind inevitably returns to the cloudy, partly rainy morning at our house in Jacksonville. The phone rang. It was my dad asking if I was watching the news. “No.” “Turn it on. I’ll wait.” “What … Continue reading

Remember the Date for Money

Today is certainly a day of remembrance and mourning for our country. But, it also can be a day of pride, particularly in terms of money and power. These terrorists didn’t randomly strike the World Trade Center; their intent was to break down the United States power. The power our country receives from its economy. Certainly the immediate effects of the September 11 tragedy caused a direct downturn of our financial systems, but it did not have the devastating results these terrorists had hoped for. If there are any money lessons to be learned from this day, it is the … Continue reading

The Day the United States once again became United

I wrote my feelings down on the anniversary of September 11, 2001 and later posted it here in, “September 11: In Honor of the Fallen and Those Who Defend Us.” In it, I talked about how the United States once again became united, on that fateful Tuesday six years ago. Sadly, we do not feel very united these days. There seems to be a great divide, often partisan in nature. The left-right paradigm seems to ensure it and our leaders seem to promote it. They have never found a wedge issue or a scandal they didn’t like. They toss these … Continue reading

Taking Back 9-11

It’s the 6th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Like Pearl Harbor before it, September 11th is a day that will live in infamy for our generation. My daughter, who will be 7 in November, has no real clear cut idea of what today means. She just knows that today is a sad day. She cannot comprehend what happened. She cannot fathom the depth of grief, fear or pain that occurred. I am glad. Taking Back Today I remember each and every detail of the day in stark relief. I remember the way the house smelled. I remember the clothes … Continue reading

Five Years Later: Together We Stand …

This morning, I was driving my husband to work because there is a chance for heavy thunderstorms and since he rides a motorcycle most days, we’d rather he didn’t get drenched in a downpour. As we drove along in the car, we talked about September 11th and how we both cope with the memories of what happened today. He remembers that it was a day of sadness and he tries not to focus on the profound sense of loss. In his own way, he recognizes that the grief could be paralyzing and he’d rather be numb to it. Whereas I … Continue reading

Five Years Later: The Aftermath

Everything closed around us on September 11th as businesses retail and otherwise closed and sent their employees home. We gathered together, hugging our family and trying sometimes for hours to contact loved ones elsewhere to let them know we were okay. My nephew’s father called at one point – late in the evening after hours spent on both sides trying to contact each other. His relief that his son and his son’s mother were all right was palpable over the phone. The Story Unfolded In the days afterward, this country battened down the hatches as recovery efforts in New York … Continue reading

Where Were You on September 11, 2001?

There are days in recent history that people will never forget. I remember folks from my parents’ generation saying they would never forget where they were or what they were doing when the beloved President John F. Kennedy was killed. There was also the Space Shuttle Challenger accident that people viewed on live television including many schoolchildren. Who could forget such incidents? Now we arrive at the poignant anniversary of September 11. It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years. So many people have returned to business as usual. They seem to have forgotten the horror we felt the … Continue reading

September 11: In Honor of the Fallen and Those Who Defend Us

Let’s take a moment today to remember every person that passed on that fateful Tuesday, September 11, 2001. From those who lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and United 93, to the first responders and the last responders, the latter of which are of course the men and women of our military. God bless those who fight to defend our rights and our way of life. And, lets not forget the families of those who have been lost as well as the families who currently have loved ones … Continue reading

September 11 Ideas

Monday is the sad anniversary of September 11, 2001. Stop and take a moment to remember. Do you remember all the American flags that flew that day and days after? Let’s give tribute to the lives of innocents and heroes lost that day and every day after. You can also help your kids make projects to commemorate this day in our history. Tie a great big yellow ribbon around a tree in your yard. Make a ribbon and hang it on your front door. Sketch it on poster board, have your kids color it, cut it out, and hang it … Continue reading
